A few months ago I found a silver panda from 2005 for just $20 (Canadian, so this is like $17 U.S.).

This made me wonder - I know 1990s and 1980s Pandas are really quite desirable and are worth lots more than bullion value (and also that they are often faked). Is my 2005 coin worth much more than its bullion value? (Yes I am sure that it's real, it was a cheap buy but not a ridiculous suspicious one.) How far back can you go before silver Pandas gain significant collectible value on top of their bullion value?

You got a great deal. I think your panda would fetch better than $50 on the bay. Even this years panda sells above $30.
Search 'silver panda' and you will see the yearly mintages , which should reflect price.

To me it seems the collectability value of the silver panda alongside the bullion value has always remained on the upper end of the price scale no matter what the year. At my local dealers shop, his price has remained around $6.50 per oz over spot, ever since I've been buying from him, which is the highest price over spot for all his silver coins. It truly is a beautiful coin !

Any Panda 2009 and prior tends to be collectible. It wasn't until 2010 that the mintages for this series started to take off. In 2005 the Panda mintage was only 600,000 compared to 8,891,025 for the Silver Eagle. Add to that is the fact that these coins are widely collected in Europe and Asia. As I remember in 2005 there were only two official importers of Chinese Pandas, the rest came to the U.S through secondary and tertiary markets.

With the low mintages and low U.S. import population, these coins are not as plentiful as everyone would think. The premiums for these 2009 and prior issues, and especially the 1999 and prior issues, far .... far out pace spot silver prices.
