This is my first post here and I would start off by saying I have been browsing the site for many days and find this site very educational and addicting, and I look forward to learning from everyone here. I have been away from coin collecting for SEVERAL years and have found the time to get back in to it. I just received a few Morgans that I purchased off ebay. The coins I received are in no way the coins that were shown when I purchased them, and I have let the seller know. I bid on them based on the photos, and now have an opportunity to make an offer and receive a refund, or just send them back. For now I will just post one of the Morgans I received. What would you approximate the grade and/or value of this 1881-o Morgan? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Budman2K Edited by Budman2K 11/19/2007 12:10 pm

First off: Welcome Budman2K, thanks for joining us.
Next: I would grade this coin AU-50 details--whizzed and scratched, and I wouldn't pay more than $11-12 dollars for it at my local dealer as it would be in the junk box with the other abused silver.

Thanks halfabustisbetter, I appreciate your opinion. Here is the other Morgan, its a 1880-s, it is a plastic holder so a little tougher to photograph. Would this one be about the same?

HABIB nailed it in my opinion. Absolutely cleaned and nicely scratched. Hopefully the seller will be reasonable because if you have to return the coin at your expense and only get refunded the purchase price you might come close to spending the value of the coin in shipping charges.
Welcome though!

Budman,
This coin is much nicer. What kind of holder is it in? Is it a slab with a grade? If so, what is the company. I would grade this one (the 1880-S) about an MS-62. There is some obverse spotting, the eagles breast is weak, there is some chatter on the cheek as well as some other random hits.
Are the two coins exclusive of each other? Depending on the price I might keep the second one.

I agree with everyone about the 1880-O it has definately been polished up a bit and not worth much more than bullion. The 1880-S looks like it may be in a PCGS slab (but could also be in one of those small square holders) and is a much better looking coin. I would grade this one MS-62 or 63 and according to price I may keep this one as well, but just remember there are some very high graded for this date (1880-S) so even though the grade may seem high the price is kept down because so many are out there in super high grades (I have seen many from MS-66-68 and have even seen one MS-69PL in a PCGS slab of this Date/Mintmark)

Jim, the second one is in a generic informational holder that just says "BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED". Both coins are from the same seller, but I guess I could just return the 1881-o. The images the seller used are macro scans of the coins and the 1880-s looked like not a mark on it so I bid $39 and the 1881-o had just a few ticks so I bid $28. I have since found out the seller is using the same scan everytime he sells these dates and mint marks. I will email the seller and make him an offer for the pair so the post office doesn't get rich of this. I will really have to learn my way around these coins before making overpriced bids. Oh well, live and learn I guess. Thanks for your opinion also. Here are a few photos of the generic holder.

Budman, welcome to the forum. You have just learned what many of us have learned when first starting out. Good news is that you learned a relatively cheap lesson. Without over loading you with info, we have an ebay discussion forum here with recommended seller's. I think it would behoove you to check them out. As a general rule for you until you come up to speed on the series you want to collect, if you buy slabbed coins, buy from PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS. They are all pretty close in their grading to the true condition. You will find many people/sellers on ebay that can make a coin look pristine via photo software. It is always "buyers beware". Enjoy your time here as you will find loads of knowledge and people willing to help.

I have seen the Global slabs before, one was on Anacondas' site with a rainbow Morgan that had been crossed from a pcgs holder at the same grade..... why, oh why would someone make that cross?
