For all you home scientists; why do silver candle sticks need to be polished every few weeks, but it takes forever for a Peace dollar to become tarnished?

Probably has to do with the composition of the silver. Also if you polished that Peace dollar it would probably tarnish too.

I don't know if its true, but I've been told, once you polish any silver, it tends to tarnish much faster.

Nope - coin silver and sterling silver are practically the same thing.

Coins are 90% silver and 10% copper while sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

I would think it has to do with exposure to air (and contaminants) and humidity. A coin in a drawer doesn't get as much exposure and is probably not as likely to be stored next to substances it will react to (at least as compared to a candle stick holder - I don't know of Air-tite making any candle stick containers).

I would also wonder if the way they are manufactured would make the surface more likely to react (candlestick holders are cast from what I know as opposed to being crushed by a couple hundred tons of pressure applied in the minting process).

I'll wait and see if any of our resident scientists can illuminate us better

My guess is that there are natural oils in the air and about the equipment at the mint that probably lightly coat the planchet metal. I believe that these compounds get stamped onto the metals surfaces and form a fine coating. Not sure about this but I read that many years ago.

When you dip a coin you remove the natural mint made (oils?) coating on the metal and expose it to todays more toxic environment. Anything can happen then. Anyone know for sure? Let us know. Good luck...G.

I think I am going to try an experiment and see how long it takes an uncleaned, BU silver coin to tarnish.

I'll just take one out of its container and set it on a shelf. Maybe I'll take pictures every few days or so.

The sacrafices one must make...

I believe it has more to do with the planchet preparation and the type of wash used that retards the toning of Peace dollars and the latter date Morgans. Also, the difference in the compositions does have an effect......toning which takes around 60 years for a 90% silver Morgan can happen in a couple of years to the almost pure ASE's.
