I made an offer at a popular online dealers website for this coin (which was a couple hundred dollars less than their original asking price) and was wondering what all of you people thought would be a fair price to pay for this particular coin. A little about the coin, it is graded by PCGS as PR-62CAM and I could care less about the toning but know that some toned coins sell for a sizable premium over non toned examples. I don't really care about the grade either nor that it is graded because it will be going into my Dansco7070 album anyway. Anyhow here are the pictures and please lets just keep the responses on what you think would be a fair price for this particular coin (even if you feel it deserves a price increase because of the toning or think the toning on this coin shouldn't carry a premium at all)

I'm guessing they probably had it around $2200 and I bet there is a premium added because of the toning and because it's in a PCGS slab.

your price is actually closer to what I offered (but if your price is a fair price for a non-toned example then their asking price is probably not that far off base). I would probably find another example that wasn't toned or graded but have found that this series is pretty hard to find in the condition I am looking for to put in my album

Hi Bryan,
I looked up some Heritage auction records and it looks like this coin varies wildly in price. Certified PR-61 examples seem priced at a bit below $1000. A PR-62 grade takes the price to about $2000, or sometimes higher. This particular coin has some very nice original toning on the reverse but the blotchy color pattern might eventually start to bother me. For some reason 20-cent proofs don't seem to tone in nice target patterns like you see on quarters and halves, so maybe this is as good as you can expect. The obverse has a dull grayish tone with little color. I don't see much cameo contrast on either side, but maybe that's just the photo.
If I wanted the '76 in proof I would try to find a really nice PR-61 for significantly less money, or else wait for a 62 or 63 that had great appeal on both sides. If you like this coin and can get it for less than $2000 it might still be a very good buy. Good luck, and please let us know what you decide to do!

It sure looks a lot nicer than the pr62cam that was sold on Heritage this year for $2100, so I think in the $2100-$2200 range would seem fair. Remember, if you bought her through a heritage auction, there is no return privilege which you do have buying from this dealer, so there is no real risk involved of you getting stuck with a dog. Cool coin, Bryan! BTW, the second picture didn't show up on their website, which I find is more of a true to life view than the scan. I'm sure a quick email would get you that picture and maybe help with your decision.

I have bought a few coins from this dealer and have never been disappointed yet. hadleydog, you were one of the ones I was hoping would respond to this thread because of your expertise with toned coins. I know these guys have a fantastic eye and pretty much trust that anything I buy from them will be a nice piece. I just didn't want to offend them with a lowball offer especially since I know how nice this coin probably looks in hand

I actually kinda like this one. This might be a decent pick up. I have a PF63 which has some beautiful toning but no Cameo.

I'm not buying coins at this level, but if I was I don't think I'd buy this one. Detail & strike wise it looks great, & the reverse looks really nice. However, I couldn't get past the "splotchy" toning on the obverse & the 2 black dots above & below the date. Every time I look at it my eyes get drawn to the black dots.

nah I guess my offer of 2150 was too low for them (actually I probably should have offered more considering what I have seen other examples going for that doesn't look this nice) and since it is so close to Christmas and this is the first year my wife and I will not be together I need to make my daughters (who lives with me) Christmas a little special this year instead of getting myself a new coin
