While looking around on ebay I found some 2009 penny rolls that have stamps on them from the opening day ceremony. Sellers specifically mention if a roll has been "cancelled."

I found this article and I saw others mentioning people had to wait in a line to have their roll/stamp cancelled and those will be more valuable?

Any idea what this is about?

It's the numismatic equivalent of a First Day Cover, and this time a real one instead of those stupid TPG "First Strike" monstrosities. Those who waited in the poor weather to have their rolls cancelled by USPS onsite created a genuine rarity of sorts, Cents from the official release ceremony with sure provenance. If the 2009 Cents ever become collectable for the date, these rolls will be the alpha dogs.

Thanks Dave. I guess I'm just confused on why you would need USPS to stamp cancelled on the roll? These are people who ordered online but then showed up in person to get them instead? Then they waited in line to tell USPS not to mail them so the roll got stamped? Reason I asked is I bought a 2009-P Presidency roll for $10 that has a cancelled stamp from Nov 12, 2009.

I went to the release ceremony for the Formative Years (LP2) in Lincoln City, Indiana. We were able to buy 6 rolls per person on that day. It was quite a long line but you could go through more than once if you waited in line again. People then took these rolls and had them cancelled at the Lincoln City Post Office. The only way to get a roll stamped with a date of the release ceremony was to be there as the online orders didn't ship until after the release. So, it is proof that roll came from the ceremony.

I did not wait in line for the stamps (it was a long day and I wasn't up for hours more of waiting), but I have 30 rolls from the opening day ceremony. Of course, I can't prove that they came from there but that's not really why I went anyway.

I attended the release ceremonies in Springfield, IL for the 2009 Professional Life and 2010 Shield cents, the Springfield Post Office created a special cancellation stamp for the events.

Tragically, that's probably something I'd collect.

Also, really darn cool.

So by cancelled do you just mean the stamp they put over a stamp when you mail a letter to indicate it was used? What did they charge per roll at the ceremony? Was $10 a fair price for the 2009-p presidency roll cancelled 11/12/09 a fair price?

At the LP2 / Formative Years ceremony, you paid for a postage stamp, put it on the coin and they used a cancellation stamp as if it had been mailed. Price is all relative, $10 doesn't sound bad to me - for the price of lunch out, you got a piece of history.
