I am assuming that this was caused by extreme heat?

I think you're right -- fire/heat damage.

It would still feel very solid. In fact, the application of extreme heat is going to make it harder and more brittle.

Yeah, I got this in change from the LCS. I pointed it out to the cashier and she was going to replace it, but I said "no, I want to keep it!"

Interesting damage. I think it's probably from fire or some source of heat.
