Hi everyone,
Sorry that this is a little bit off topic, but it still has to do with coin collecting.
I was thinking of applying as a bank teller at my local bank that I go to. However, a few tellers know me there pretty well, and they know that I am a coin/paper money collector.
Do you think that it would be wise to apply at this bank? I mean the branch manager knows me pretty well as well as the tellers, but I don't want to make it akward by working there with them.
Should I apply there or at another bank?
Thank you in advance, -Ben

I'd jump at the chance to work at the bank where I know everyone

I agree with grace, take a shot. If they wont hire you because your a coin collector, that tells me that I wouldnt want to work with them either :)
Unless of course you are in the back corner, sorting through the motherload of halves or something, then I could see it being a problem. Or, when it takes you 15 minutes to hand some guy his change because your looking through them first, you might have a problem :) :)

I'm just wondering: 1) If they refuse to hire you because of your coin collecting... 2) Would a later application at another bank ask you, "Have you ever been turned down for an application as a bank worker?," thereby jeopardizing your later applications.
Or is that a stretch?

Not sure of where you are but anything that they would say about not hiring you for such personal reasons is actually against the law. Remember a bank is a Federally controlled organization and not hiring you for such a personal type hobby would not be in their best interest due to a legal action on your part. I know many people that have relatives in banks that are coin collectors and are collectors as well. The banks know it and allow coins to be put aside for such reasons. In many instances this makes for better customer relations and has been known to draw customers. So why would any bank even consider not hiring you due to a hobby. Of course if your hobby was robbing banks, stores, prison record, that may have a minor roll in your being hired.

I don't think I could be a bank teller. I'd spend all my time going through change and looking for old bills. I'd be fired for not doing my job.

Go ahead and apply...you can't get the job if you don't apply for it.
I supervise (directly and indirectly) about 100 full-time and 160 part-time employees. I will caution that as an employee, your first duty is the efficient and effective completion of your job responsibilities. Also, you may find that tellers have very restricted access to "the money" so you may not have as good a time as you're thinking to look through the bank's coin and currency supply! If you're hired, you'll want to clear any such activities with your supervisor. (Aren't I a wet blanket!)

Ben, if you are really interested in a banking industry job, go in and talk with the branch manager that you know and share your thoughts. I am sure that this person will give you good advise and be open as to whether or not your collecting would effect a teller position. At this point in time, you have not formally applied it and will not cause problems with other applications.
My guess is that they will have no problem with your hobby as long as it does not effect your performance. Best of luck and go for it. Jim

Well I am a college student so I was thinking of working during Christmas Vacation, Summer vacation, and on the weekends. But I will deffinately go in this weekend and talk to the branch manager. I know at the other branch, one of my tellers is a collector. I can ask him for a certain condtion, FRB, series... and he also saves BU rolls of the State Quarters and Presidential dollars. So he kinda knows the lingo which really helps me out, the customer. My whole goal of being a teller wasn't exactly to look through all of the money, but that is a good idea. But lets take it one step at a time here. I'll get the application and then work form there. My major is accounting, but I plan do be either a accountant, banker, or stock broker. And I guess my whole interest in economics started me in coin/paper money collecting. Another quick question, I am 18 years old. Is there a minimum age to be a teller? Thankyou, -Ben

Don't know the answer to that one. My guess is 18 is old enough, though, looking at the young ladies that work at my bank. Jim

Generally there isn't a minimum age, but if there was (and it depends on the bank), the minimum age would probably be 18. I would apply for the position. Just remember, you are there to work, not to collect coins. When I worked retail, I found a couple silver coins by "accident" meaning I wasn't quite looking for them, I just noticed something different about the coin I was holding. Just be observant and aware of what you are doing. One time, I came in to relieve the cashier and on my first transaction of the day since she left I noticed a Silver Certificate sitting on the top of the ones. Yay! I told my manager later and she said she found some others too, but I had the oldest series so there must have been a customer using them...I found some old dateless Buffalo nickels too...foreign coins, etc. Oh yea, and Wheaties.

Ben, 18 is the minimum age. Not that you have anything to hide, but the bank will also do a criminal and credit check on you. They just want to know who they are hiring.
