(Imaginary Situation) Okay, I hit the lottery and have finally given in to the rush of collectors getting their coins graded and certified by TPGs. Here is a raw 1899 Morgan dollar and you're the new grader at one of the top three TPGs. You also have the owner of the company looking right over your shoulder, LOL . What do you grade it? Thanks for taking a look... Ben Edited by Bonedigger 11/28/2007 5:53 pm

Not much on grading coins. As a matter of fact, I only have two grades.
1. Whoa, I've got to have that.
2. Whoa, that needs a brown bag.
Definately grade 1.

I'm believing it's recovering from an older dipping. That said, with the owner breathing down my neck, the coin grades 62 or 63. I want the cheek closer to mine before I decide for sure.

From the pics I'll go ms-63......too much chatter on the cheek and obverse fields to grade higher.

I will say MS-62 even though the reverse breast feathers look weak for some reason everything else looks sharp that I would look at for wear

I think the photos are being merciless to this coin. My guess is it looks great in hand. However, the pictures don't lie. I would love to see it at a different angle though. That being said, looks like quite a few marks on the obverse, and what may be some marks above IGWT on the reverse that the photo may be hiding a bit....
My guess is MS63, maybe a 63+ if it's the lighting that is accentuating the marks.

Ben, I'm feeling a set-up here. This one has already been submitted and returned ungraded due to rim damage. As the new grader on the block, I've preserved the company's good name and still collected the fee ... Personally I would assign a 62.

It's not perfect and it's not that bad for a MS coin. I've marked the flip MS-63.
Take Care Ben

Ben,
I agree with everyone that this one falls between an MS-62 and 63 (maybe closer to 62). In addition to the hits in the fields on the obv. and rev. there is too much going on on the cheek and neck to go any higher.
I like your background fabric.

I'm thinking MS62-63 probably closer to a 62.

It's a pretty nice 99! I'd say MS60 or MS61 to save my job! Personally, it would be better served to hold out for a better MS63 this one has a tad too much contact for my taste, especially when you aren't talking that much more money between an MS60 to MS63.
