Another one for my album. I racked my brain for a couple of hours on this one and can't seem to nail it down. It might not look like it, but under 10X the corner of the 1 and the 4 just touch. Any help with the attribution is much appreciated.

Aww an 1847. Those are a pain! 43 different die varieties. Believe it or not Jerry had me attribute another one this morning.
It took a bit but I think I've got it nailed down to an N-28 which is a high R.4. Rare coin. Here's a link for comparison.

Basically with a date that has a lot of varieties it's a process of elimination. Sometimes a long process of elimination.
1847 N-28 R.4 15/15.

Thanks. Celtic, yea I know you just did one. Can't thank you enough. Like I said I spent at least 2 hours with it, and my brain was swimming. The good news is that I'll never put up another 1847. The bad news is that I have an 1848 coming I'll wait until next week though

they are tough for sure. I am thinking this is an N-12 by date position and the 8 looks repunched
at the top. Also has lines in the right place on reverse near the I in America. R3 coin. The N-13 was a no brainer compared to this one.

I think the date is too far away from the denticles to be an N-12.

I might as well throw my hat into the ring. It might not be an N-28 because it doesn't have the reverse crumbling that joins the C and E and fills in the N. Also agree probably not N-12, the star points way above the 7.

Right now I have N-3,8,9,20,30,33,34, and 39 as candidates.

Please feel free to debunk any of my possibles. To be continued.......

Yea, I think that's where we might be on this one.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one, I think the surfaces are fine. If it was, it was while it was still in circulation

Regarding cleaned or not...I think that I really do not know what to look for to determine whether it is cleaned or not. I am wondering if those who have an opinion on this coin could say what is it they see on the coin which leads to their conclusion?

Maybe I can learn something here!!

The dark halo affect around the stars and Liberty are indicative of being retoned. After looking at thousands of large cents I can tell that the color just isn't right. It's too dark for the amount of wear that this coin has received. The color should be lighter on the high points of the devices.

Well dang, let that be a lesson to me. I thought the lighter areas were from normal finger and thumb wear, and that the coin had just toned darker for some reason. Next time it's ok to give me the bad news early, I can take it

My photography skills must be worst than I thought. I looked at the coin again, and it just looks like a nice brown Here's the same 1847 next to a '48. I'm going to send them into Bob Grellman as soon as I can get his contact info. I also started a thread on it in the Classic section.

I still think it's been re-colored but I could be wrong.
