greetings all --im looking at purchasing 2 Seated Liberty dimes, raw and ungraded --and may have graded. But looking at one of them, it looks like it has a couple of small "green spots" on it --reminds me of mold, but I expect it to be PVC residue. Now, I do not believe in cleaning, but if this is a result of PVC, would a little acetone remove it, and how would you do it ....thanks and best r.

Acetone will totally remove the PVC reactivity that you describe. I recommend a soak in clean acetone of at least an hour possibly longer if the PVC residue remains. The acetone will fully evaporate and will not leave any residue on the coin.

Research the forum very carefully for the proper use of acetone. Not for the coin - it can't hurt the coin, only help - but for your personal safety. Acetone is more volatile and more flammable than gasoline and don't use it anywhere you'd worry about a couple ounces of gas being poured out.

Debris dissolved in acetone will usually redeposit on the coin if the acetone completely evaporates. One needs to dump out the acetone before it evaporates while the debris is still in solution.

Would a bath in distilled water work and carefully dry?

No distilled water will only loosen crud not dissolve PVC residue.

Do not touch anything to it to dry it as even the softest cloth can leave hairline scratches. After the acetone soak, rinse it again in "clean" acetone then let the acetone evaporate off naturally and voila

I make sure coin is vertical in acetone, and rinse the coin a little in fresh while I remove it to make sure the surfaces are totally clean.

The right dish will help. I always go from acetone to fresh acetone to fresh distilled water, then pat dry in a microfiber towel.

Tap water has dissolved solids in it like calcium, iron and fluoride that can get deposited on the coin. Distilled water is tap water that's been boiled into steam and re-condensed into water again so it doesn't have any of these trace elements. Just pure H2O. Actually, Scropper I do the exact opposite. Water then acetone. Water will leave spotting.

We have great tasting water at home here, but every so often, when water pressure goes down, I have to unscrew the screen and remove the calcium particles caught in the screen..

Acetone soak for a couple days IN A COVERED container; you don't want it to evaporate away. Then a THOROUGH distilled water rinse. Finally PAT dry with a clean, lintless cotton cloth.

Acetone leaves the surface of your coin less contaminated than water. DO NOT rinse after acetone use as long as the last acetone solution was completely clean.
