There is a certain seller who I buy a lot of my BU wheat rolls from. Anyways this new bidder has come around who just does not lose any auctions. He must have money burning a hole in is pants. A couple times a week the seller puts up what he calls his "specials", they are tails tails rolls and usually have some beautiful cents and RPM's in them. Anyways people usually buy one, two, maybe even 5 of these rolls, well this guy buys them all. I ended up sending the seller a note tonight voicing my frustration. This new bidder has increased this sellers income by at least 2 folds if not more. He used to sell 6 rolls of unsearched wheats for $79 (which I got for $60), now these sell for over $120 because the new buyer bids them up and always wins. I let the seller know I was happy to see him making some money, but come on throw me a bone. I have been a reliable customer for a year now and have spent a good sum of money.

He had 25 cent rolls of wheats (which are a rare find) up tonight and they last all of 5 min before the buyer bought them all. I just do not get it and am flustered so I needed to vent here. Thanks for listening, I feel better, block the bad, in with the good.

I had that happen to me with a seller who sold the Mexican coins I'm so fond of ,,it is irritating !

I wonder what the new buyer would be paying if you don't bid against him ,,or if you increase your max by a bit ?

Just be patient. He will burn out. Every glutton has his limits.

I have to admit when this happened to me I helped the glutton burn out faster by bidding up the price every time but letting him win.

"Knock yourself out, buddy."

Not sure I am proud of that, but it worked.

Not trying to be a contrarian, but here it goes. You all know I love estate auctions. A while back, I found one in rural Va. that was selling bulk bags of 90% silver, junk, but silver. I was buying $20 face value bags for $24.00 plus a 10% buyers premium, there was no one there interested is silver. I was loving life. Then someone woke up and the price ran right up to melt. Sure, I was disappointed, but in fact I had just had a great run. The coins were paying for themselves and showing a huge profit.

Now, the question is, were those rolls generating enough quality coins and RPMs that they were paying for themselves. If so, then you had a great run and now people have found out. And as was stated, if they really are not worth it, this guy will go away shortly and things will return to normal.

The same free market we love, one that allows us to sell coins on ebay and make strong profits is the same one that bites us when trying to buy. I was just sniped on a 1851 Large Cent and lost out on a good coin. Thought I was going to steal it but it was worth what it went for. Man I was frustrated, but in the end, I was my own worst enemy.

Anyway, just my thoughts,
Jim

If I were to sell some of the coins I have got from him I would surely make a profit. He has auctions for rolls of BU OBW wheats that sell for 20-40 a roll plus shipping, then those same rolls he will put up buy it nows for $17.95-$19.99 with free shipping. He also puts up 12 memorial rolls for $29.99 shipped, and I get to pick the dates (or used to). I have 1972-S, 1972, 1969-S, 1970-S, 1982, 1960-D small dates, and more that I have got for $3 a roll that is a great deal. I posted his name in another thread once but edited it out after I thought about it. I also have got rolls from 1942-58 from him, I once asked for a second chance offer on a roll of 1955 OBW cents and he sold them to me for $65. So yes I have had a great run, I have over 150 BU rolls still in their wrapper and am deciding on opening more up for the DDO's and RPM's or just enjoying the different types I have. What makes it worse is he replied to my questions telling me "ya, you got robbed, those rolls had some great dates." He is going to email me Monday before he puts up the next batch of buy it nows so I can get a couple rolls.

I have bid up a few auctions to try and find his breaking point, it must be high because I have not found it yet. Thanks for the support, I need to lick my wounds and suck it up, it has been a good run!

I know how you feel - I had to abandon my 1921 Morgan specialization for the same reason. Too many others, some of whom had deeper pockets than I, began outbidding me. So, I made lemons into lemonade - I sold mine back into the new market at substantial profit.

Dave,

I have seen his rolls sold by people who bought them from him, they sold for more. There is a guy who has a few up now, I found where he bought them from the seller, one of the reasons to have more than one id!
Rest in Peace

Earlier this year I started bidding on Auctions through Proxy Bid. I had poor success mainly due to the same 4 or 5 people bidding insane money on most auctions. Superdave warned me that this was a tricky arena to play in and I can tell you he was dead right. For a while I thought they might be shill bidders but it made no sense for the Auction houses to lose that many sales to bogus bidding. I finally gave up altogether. It is frustrating when you bid a fair price and lose 99% of the stuff you bid on. I guess if you have deep pockets and little knowledge you can make stuff rough on us collectors. Mike

I feel better! He put up some lots for me tonight with the buy it nows! I swear this guy must work at a bank and goes around to all the branches and does audits then buys them for face. I bought a box (20 rolls) of 1964 today, 12 mixed, all OBW. For those wondering who this is, well I might as well give the name- http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZbilliec310 . I have asked for almost all dates between 1959-1982 and he always has them. I once said I wanted a particular date, I got 12 OBW rolls of mixed wrappers.
