What is a good source to find rarity info on Half Cents and large cents? Sorry if this is already available through another thread - couldn't find it.

There is a die variety search button near the top left. You type in the date and mint and the kind of variety and it will show stuff.

That works good on Lincoln Cent dates but not on early dates... unless I'm doing something wrong.

This a good question. I usually go to Heritage Auctions auction archives and search for what I'm looking for say 1803 S-252 and it will show previous Heritage sales an the rarity #s for the coins sold. Heritage Auction archives is here:

That rarity info comes from the EAC graders that grade and attribute the coins for Heritage. I know that Bob Grellman does a lot of their attributions. All of their info comes from EAC census reports compiled over the last 50 years. If you want a hard copy of R. #s you could always purchase Copper Quotes by Robinson for all rarity #s and current prices for all Sheldon, Newcomb and Cohen die varieties.

Best for Half Cents in affordable mode - is Greg Heim's Quickfinder book, around $17.00 as for Large Cent's there is no real cheap way to amass quality information, but Breen's Encyclopedia of US Large Cents is a great start for free online at - http://www.pcgs.com/books/earlycents The actual book will set you back around $125.00 if you can find a copy (they are out of print now). Bill Noyes has a set of books out on US Large Cents that are probably the best reference around, but a full set of them will run you $700-1,200 if purchased used/new. Charles Davis is the only dealer for them, though they pop up at various other numismatic book auctions, (that is how I got all of mine), I paid about $700 over the past year to get each of his 6 volumes.

Breen's Half Cent book is also great so is Manley's Die State book, both again out of print, Breens Half Cent Encyclopedia runs around $45-70 on ebay Manley's book is a tough find but expect to pay around $200.00 when you find a copy today.

I love using Heritage Auctions site myself, search by Walter Husak's Collection Sale #460 February 15th, 2008 Long Beach Sale, he had one of the most complete variety collections, and Mark Borkardt's descriptions in the catalog are excellent. (Used catalogs can be found, grab one if you can, before someone else does and puts it up for a high dollar resale, Amazon lists some trying to get $300+ but occasionally they will show up on ebay in a group of catalogs for next to nothing. (this is only for the Husak book, not the entire #460 sale (which has the same descriptions) just smaller photos.

Yeah, CQR has pretty up-to-date census information in it. You're not looking to identify varieties, just get R numbers on varieties you know, right? Noyes is the guy keeping track of such things these days.

Johnj,

In an attempt to address your inquiry to the best of my knowledge a free on-line, one-stop-shop URL for BOTH large and Half Cents depicting the 'National Numismatic Collection' partially fits the bill in providing several PUPs (a few with related, descriptive verbiage) along with close-up color photos to make the going a bit easier:

I hope this source contributes some to your compilation of reference material.,

If you want your own resource in your library try:

The Half Cent Die State Book/1793-1857 by Ronald P. Manley
OR
Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents/1793-1857

As for Large Cents I know the books are out there but the only on I have this one since I wasn't deep into the earlier coins.

U. S. Cents/1840-1857 by John Grellman

BTW I believe they are all expensive; I know I paid $100 for the Grellman book.

Thank you all - great sources.
mdpmedia : I saved some Half Cent R info, not too long ago, from a site with your 'name' on it. I have been using that for my Half Cents. I can't seem to get back into that site any more... but thanks - I saved that part of it.

Tom Deck EAC member and dealer has a nice website showing his personal collection here: http://www.largecents.net/

I forgot to mention The Cent book by John D. Wright, a fantastic book on the Middle dates, (the best IMO) I like it even better than Noyes book. There is a beat up copy selling cheap ($40.00) on ebay now. I sold my extra copy a couple of months ago here on CCF. You can still get them new from John and his wife Mabel or other EAC dealers for around $95-125.

On the Half Cents there is always the original Cohen "Little Half Sisters" book the 2nd edition is better as a reference, I have several copies of both 1st and 2nd editions in my library, I will pick them up when I find them for a bargain, they usually sell in the $75 and up range.

Auction catalogs and auction house websites are a great reference on certain varieties if you know what you are looking for, Goldbergs, Stack's/Bowers, Heritage are all in my often used bookmarks for their archives. I have many of their catalogs, just not the place to keep them all out at home right now, so most live in boxes in storage at the moment.

As to the later date Large cents, Bob Grellman has three editions out. The first one is in a 3 ring binder set, the second one (I have currently) is hardbound and co-authored with J. Reviers, his latest book is just his name and from what I understand greatly updated from the other two editions I mentioned and full of color photos.

Jack Robinson Copper Quotes are great, but unfortunately Jack has stopped producing and writing them now, so they will be out of date as to pricing.

Remember if you are an ANA Member, you can borrow most of these books for a month or more for only the cost of postage and insurance. I usually check out my maximum allotment of 6 items every month. It's a great resource to get books that are too expensive to buy, or when you just need a few pages to photocopy for your own research.
