A friend of mine has a U.S. Red Book (2005) in the Jefferson nickel section it has listed a 1977D in ms-63 for .50 cents, with a mintage of 297 plus mil., It also has a 1982P listing for $2.50 in ms-63 with a mintage of 292plus mil, Why the big difference? Thanks, SHAFTA9a

Shaft, I just checked the 2008 and it is the same. My guess is the believed coins in circulation. what they mint and what they circulate can be two completely different animals. Just a guess, though.

The big difference I believe , is that there were no mint sets made in 1982 or 1983, making high quality coins from those years harder to find. Look at most all coins of those two years and you'll see they all have a pretty good premium in uncirculated grades. The 1983-P quarter alone runs about $20 and up for MS specimens

Similar with the 92P at $1.50 97D Also. Remember the Red Book is a guide, not a bible. Many errors in every edition. Many people that use this book send letters noting such errors or descripencies to Whitman. I have over the years. Most get blown away or ignored but some are corrected if necessary. If you feel these are in error, contact Whitman Publishing. They at one time sent me a book free for my info.

What InfiniteInterest said is correct.
no mint sets and few were saved.
Look at the prices for the Washington quarters.
Talk about sticker shock.
