Here's a coin I'm considering. Any thoughts on the condition or other possible issues? This is an S-47, and I might grade it as far as F15. Btw, the color between obverse/reverse is due to different lighting conditions. The patina is described as chocolate brown. TIA!

As a point of reference, here's the same date/variety graded as F12 by NGC (source: Heritage Auctions)

Hi Kurt,

Compared to the reference F-12 NGC coin I can see this one as Fine-15 or maybe even VF-20 for detail. However, with the slight porosity visible especially on the obverse and the large rim dings at 12:00 (obverse) and 3:30 (reverse) I don't think this one would slab at NGC or PCGS. I would guess it might net-grade at VG-10 or maybe F-12. It should sell for less than whatever that no-problem NGC coin cost.

Just my opinion!

Thanks for your thoughts...I do agree those dings are worse than nicks on the slabbed example, and I should consider how they affect the overall grade.

That certainly appears to be a very nice example that anyone would be pleased to have in a collection. If the price is right...and you've got the $$...go for it.
