Welcome to my first foray into the grading thread, and my first attempt at pictures you can grade with ! For your viewing pleasure - 1834 Bust Half dollar. Has some light hairlines from cleaning on the obverse, the reverse does not seem to have any cleaning hairlines. The color is a nice silver/blue on most of obverse and reverse is a bit deeper blue.I took a close -up of the date and highlighted two areas that would not photo well- not sure what is going on there. Also , on the edge of the coin it reads "Fifty cents or ALF a dollar"...no H ? My First Bust half, I like it alot. Compared to some of the others I have scrutinized lately , it has a decently original look-to me What say you ? Edited by InfiniteInterest 12/01/2007 6:29 pm

VF details, net F for the cleaning. It looks pretty nice, certainly better than 90% of the cleaned ebay junk out there. I'll attribute it later when I get my book from the other room, since I'm too lazy to get up now.

I wonder if we could think of it as close to XF, net VF, considering a pretty flat obverse strike. The reverse is nice. I'm tentatively calling it O-117, Small Date, Small Letters, but I'm a real rookie with these so I'm ready to listen to more experienced voices.

This is a great coin for a grading exercise. I think Dave's got a good eye, here. The clasp detail (obverse) and feather detail (reverse) really argue for XF, while the hair (obverse) really looks like F-VF. The mint turned out a less consistent product during the 1800's. I'd put it at a VF-35 details. Nice coin. I'd find a home for it in my collection given the chance.

I don't know enough to attribute it, & am not going to comment on the cleaning other than to say a lot of these have been. I think the reverse just squeaks into the XF40 range, lots of nice detail there. The obverse seems weaker than the reverse, could be strike related, but I'd go VF.

Thanks for the comments and grade estimations. He had the coin graded VF/XF, I bought the coin for VF money, I am not real familiar with the series but I could see the weak obv strike and the reverse is just so very nice . It was the only one in the case I could not tell was cleaned without a loupe.
I am also still wondering about the edge lettering. The edge reads " Fifty cents or alf a dollar " there is no "H" in Half- is this normal ? And the picture is highlighted at the 8 in the date, appears to be raised there just a bit in the shape of the highlights- anything there ?
Hunter, if you are interested, we can talk about adding that coin to your collection- shoot me an email.

Net VF-35 I would say and agree the reverse is an XF. A nice bustie for sure!

Very nice coin! I see this coin as having EF40 details, cleaned. I agree witht the attribution of O-117. This variety has a Rarity rating of 2. Congratulations on a nice purchase!
