Hello all,
I am writing to see if anyone else is coming across thick planchets like I am. I have several of them, I also have a 2007-P DDO on a thick planchet. I was wondering if this is in specs for a planchet or is it a error?. I also have a 1999-P DDO which I think is a new variety, going to send it to Bob Piazza to look at to see if it is. Please give me your feed back on this.

Thank you,

Patrick

How are you determining that it is "thick" if you aren't weighing it? Just looking at the edge? That's no good because the stronger the strike the thicker the ege will be. Planchet thickness can usually only really be determined beore the con is struck, or by the weight.

I just found a similar coin too. It's 2001 D Lincoln Cent, in AU condition. It looks and feel thicker than normal coin. The weight came out to be 2.50g. The rim is evenly triked. The strike is right on the center (no uneven/off-center...). Without even look at it, if you hold it in your hand, you should feel the differences. What's up with that?

I put up a "normal" 2000D AU cent and the weight came out 2.51g.

What does this mean? Do you mean it is evenly struk up all the way around?

If thiat is what you mean then you have run into the case where the eyes can deceive the other senses. You say it looks thicker and feels heavier. But it is the same diameter and the same weight. (Mint tolerance on the cent is +/- .1 grams so cents are to legal standard if they weigh anywhere from 2.4 to 2.6 grams.) A better struck coin causes the rims to fill completely and actually makes the edge of the coin thicker than on a normally struck coin. But if you were to measure the thickness field to field you would find it to be THINNER than a normal cent. But your eyes can't see that. They see the thicker edge and your eyes tell your brain that it is thicker. And the brain says if it is thicker it MUST be heavier, so you perceive it to be heavier when you hold it in your hand. But the scale tells the truth.

Conder,

Yes, it's evenly struck all the way around (not like when I found Roosevelt dimes in the 80s, where they were not evenly strucked).

I guess what you said is true. More info for me to read.

Thanks
