I have been working through an inherited collection of mostly classic coins with the much appreciated help of the forum members here. I was nearing completion of sorting through those coins when my family reminded me that we also have two boxes of modern coins! Some more "work" for me, but a very welcome surprise!

I've just finished looking through the boxes and was hoping to get some advice about how best to sell these...I just want to make sure I don't make any bad mistakes. There don't appear to be any earth-shattering finds, although there are a number of nice gold and silver coins.

My main questions: Would selling through ebay be a good idea for these? Perhaps I should look into a place like APMEX for some? Are there any that would benefit from being graded? Perhaps the gold and silver eagles (although they are in nice boxes)? Any other advice in general? Thanks.

Here is a not-too-well-organized list of the coins...pretty much all of the coins have the boxes and certificates of authenticity:

(5) 1979 (Susan B Anthony) Dollar Souvenir Set
(5) 1980 (Susan B Anthony) Dollar Souvenir Set

WOW, you have a lot of STUFF to worry about.
So much depends on you now. If you want to become a coin collector, great start. If you want to just sell them off, yes ebay is the place. Taking them to a coin store would get you very little in comparison but much faster results. And with places like ebay, your going to do a lot of shipping and not necessarily selling them all off. Get yourself a copy of the Red Book and look up all that stuff.

Yeah, it's a pretty good problem to have.

I've been over on the classic forum for a few months now...have some coins at Heritage, some sold through Great Collections, a handful sold to APMEX, a couple sold to a local shop, and I've sold about 15-20 myself on ebay. I will be keeping some of the classic coins, and perhaps a select few from this group, although most of these will go up for sale I think.

I have the Red Book and have been using numismedia and checking past auction results...I don't see all of these listed on numismedia. I'll give the Red Book a look but I find that it's pretty far off for pricing. I was thinking that I might group a bunch of these together for sale on ebay...to save a bit on time and shipping expenses. I just wanted to check if there is anything that should be sent for grading or sold at some place other than ebay.

It is all pretty much $bay stuff. Unless some of the commemoratives are MS69 or 70's none of what you have there would benefit from grading. Too bad you are not at a point yet where you can offer these for a pre sale to members first.

Some of what you have would be of interest to many here. You can however post links to your $bay sales.

Which ones did you have in mind? I can try to take a close at those and post pics if it might be helpful.

I will be certain to post links in the sales promotion forum.

Do yourself a huge favour this is really simple stuff . There is well published info on your listed material. If you want to sell it you will probably get 10 to 15 back of Grey sheet on the sets and the gold probably melt or close. Do not waste time and fees on selling this stuff on ebay.

Thanks for the advice. What are you suggesting though, selling to a local coin shop?

Looks like a lot of duplicate cons.

Your $5.00 gold coins will have the most value, about $300 each.
A dealer will pay back of that.

If coins like that were passed down to me. I would keep one set of each
coin, then sell the rest. Then use the money to buy other coins.

I think the 1991 set in the wood box would be my favorite.

Phaedrus29, I don't know if this is an option for you, but have you thought about attending a local coin show? This way you could walk around to multiple dealers and get the best offers. Likely there is a dealer or two who deals mostly in modern stuff. They'd probably pay you under bid, but you'd probably end up netting the same as ebay with far less hassle. Otherwise, I'd say go with ebay. Descriptions and pictures are very important. Definitely include the information about these being from an estate. People seem to like that more versus coins that have been who knows where.

I haven't really thought about this option, but I will look into it, thanks.

There have been quite a mix of opinions here. Any other thoughts welcome!

I'm planning to try the Mint Sets on ebay shortly:
Advice-Please-With-Inherited-Collection
Just wondering if you have any advice about what I should include in the listing. There are three original shipping boxes from the mint, so I thought I would mention that...I don't know if that's worth anything to collectors. I've just taken the overall shot and one pic of each different year of the sets...I figure that's probably adequate, right?

You will get more from a dealer (if you pick a fair one) than you will on ebay for this stuff. There are well established buy sell prices on this very common material.

I disagree. Most dealers I know do not even want the mint sets...you would be lucky to get anything over face value from a dealer here. Heck, when I worked at a shop, we had so many of these that they were cut open and put in the till.

Maybe, but finding such a dealer nearby may be tough. Maybe I won't do much better financially through ebay, but I do like the idea that the coins might go immediately to a new home.

I'm just planning to sell all of the proof sets together...I'd rather not deal with parting them out into smaller lots. They should be up for sale shortly:Advice-Please-With-Inherited-Collection

I Disagree as well.

You would be better off on ebay OR wait until you have enough posts here to offer them here if you have the inclination to do so.

Not only can you learn more about the hobby here and meet ALOT of good people, but you might just "Get the Bug" and maybe want to expand your collection.

With what ever you may decide, good luck and be careful.
