I recently picked this coin up as I was wanting to do a type set, and well, its a gorgeous strike on this Type 1. After speaking with the dealer who originally sent this coin in to PCGS, he said he sent it in thinking it could come back as a Proof. I purchased this earlier in the week, from one of his employees. The most I know about Proof Buffalo's is they are a pain to determine. Even if it is not a proof, I am more than happy with this purchase.

What does the holder tell you?

The Holder tells me otherwise, but, I've always been told "buy the coin, not the holder."
I figured I could gain a little knowledge here, since I know next to nothing about the differences between Proof and Business strike Buffalo.

I see what you mean. I'm not a proof buffalo expert , but I'm leaning towards MS-67 (great business strike) .

I think it was an act of cruelty to numismatists to create a design with blurred detail and rough fields, and then make us try to tell Business Strikes from Proofs. I don't see enough here to even guess. Look at the rim from 9:00-12:00 obverse - that's where the "Proof rim" will best show. I looked at a couple dozen 66's and 67's at Heritage - mixed Proofs and Business coins - and couldn't tell any of them apart in Heritage's images.

Thanks SsuperDdave. I tried to do the visual by looking at graded proofs, no such luck either!
Anyone care to venture what this received from PCGS?

Well, when you look close there's a *bunch* of nicks on the coin. But the strike is mind-boggling, and even though I'd call it 65 I'm guessing PCGS has it at 66.

PCGS MS-67 again I'm leaning towards uncirculated. just look at that split tail and the absence of distinct wire rims. just MHO!!

Sadly, it only received a MS63. But what a 63 it is!

MS-63? Am I not seeing something in your photos? I own a couple of Buffalos that they graded MS-65 and don't look as good as yours!

At-least I paid less than MS63 price for it. I think it was worth it overall. Maybe it needs resubmitted.
