Hello all,

I have two slabbed Barber halves for your grading pleasure. If you dare, see how close you can come to how the TPGs called them.
First: an 1899.

Number Two: an 1894-S.

I'll show the slabs in a day or so.

Two very nice Barbers Jaobler ... the 1899 looks EF-40+ and the 1892-S probably XF-45. Are they ANACS-graded and if so did they make any comment of a possible cleaning for the 1899?

I don't have as much experience with the Barber halves so these are just educated guesses. I would say the 99 got an XF-45 (I agree with Dave on the possible cleaning, especially evident on the Obv.). On the 92-S I would say AU-50. I definitely like the 92-S over the 99. I may be off but I am not familiar with the design high points and the acceptable wear for these.

Thanks for the challenge.

I agree that the 99 looks to be XF-45 & the 92-S looks AU-50.

Thanks for the opinions, folks. I'm on the same page: I also prefer the look of the '94-S (unfortunately it's NOT a '92-S!). It seems more original and the level of remaining detail seems pretty close to that of the '99. Surprisingly, that's not how the grading services saw it:

I remember reading that NGC had been too generous with grades for coins from the Jules Reiver collection and that does seem to be the case here. Apparently NGC did not see any significant evidence of cleaning, although I do see some light hairlining on the obverse.

The '94-S is in an old ANACS holder and they do seem to have been very conservative on the grade. It may have been down-rated due to the dark toning patch under the eagle's wing. I can't make up my mind whether this is toning, dirt, or perhaps the first sign of corrosion. In any case, the coin is a lot closer to EF40 than VF30, in my opinion. Since I only paid VF money for it, I figure I got a fair deal.

Thanks again for the input!

WOW! I totally disagree with ANACS on the 94-S. After looking at both coins again I can see a little wear on the 94-S but I don't think it deserves a VF-30. The 99 is nice and the pedigree makes it that much better. I think I would still pick the 94-S if they were both offered to me.

Thanks,

Jim
