I bought both these coins blind on ebay they had bad pics and the descriptions were pretty vague. Anyone care to grade them? Also comments on whether or not it is worth while to send them to a TPG are welcome. New Pics Edited by nohope587 12/06/2007 08:41 am

The coins look too "flat" for me to accurately grade from the pictures. I'm curious as to know what the luster is like. That said, if the 1871 is "all there" and not too high of a grade, I'd love to know what you'd sell it for!

Nice coins! - that 1865 2 cent is just bedazzling! ... I also can't grade them to be honest, the colours are confusing too?... I would say the 1865 has to be a decent UNC? The other looks strong too, but tricky - VF? I would have to see photos instead of scans to judge.

Sorry about the Pics my camera had a flat battery hence the scans. both coins have some mint luster left and the 71 is in the RB range the 65 has more Luster but would not make RB only BN.
Prethen. The 71 is one I think I would like to send to PCGS I think it has a shot at MS but after I get over my jetlag today I will post some better pictures.

I think I see a little wear on the ribbon of the '65 (but it could be a strike issue). I'm not seeing any wear on the '71.
In my opinion, the '65 is at least AU-55 (maybe MS), the '71 looks MS.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm seeing what looks to be a very tiny bit of rub on the horizontal sheild lines on the 65, I'm calling it an AU58. The color looks just a little bit funky to me, but that could be the scan. The 71 looks like it would easily get into the MS range.
With your recent track record with PCGS I can't recommend you submit them. I'd be proud to own either one, should I email you my address so you can send me one(or both)?

Wow this looks like one where the colours have really messed thing up! Appears the 71 is higher grade than the 65 - where I only gave it a VF! Little bit more experience on my part to judge those scans I think..

I like the '71 much better. It looks like an original coin with just a tiny bit of rub over one or two of the obverse leaves and the arrowheads. If luster is strong it looks like an easy AU55 and maybe a 58. I suppose it could get an MS grade but I think there is a tiny bit of wear.
I don't claim to understand PCGS and their whimsical grading, but the '65 has a pinkish color that suggests "altered surface" to me. I don't think it would be worth having this one graded.

I really wanted to join in on grading these, but just don't know enough about this series to give even a semi-educated opinion, so I'll just have to ask you to be contented with a hearty "nice coins and thanks for sharing!"

NumisMatty,
2 Cent Pieces have some unusual characteristics. The word WE is the highest point on the coin and is the first to go. In VF-20, WE is still visible, but extremely worn. In F-12, you can barely see the WE if you angle it just right.
The lack of visible wear on WE is the first indication that these coins are in the AU/MS range.

i think the 71 wins the higher grade. (obv) reverses on both are a wash at au. 71 au58 (better color) even though lacking the luster of the 65 65 au50 maybe 55
