I just began learning about vams and I'm wondering if I have one here. This is a 1922d Peace dollar and it has a few marks on it:
the first one looks like a strand of hair going from her head up to the cross bar in the T in LIBERTY; the 2nd is a gouge just to the right of the Y in Liberty; 3rd is on the d in dollar and last one is on the o in dollar.

Why2k,

This could be a VAM1-B (Die Break From T) R-6
Obverse - Horizontal die break from left side of T in LIBERTY to hair bun.

The other marks appear to be post mint damage.

You can check it out here: http://www.vamworld.com/Peace+Dollar+VAMs

Nice find!

P.S. - All Morgans and Peace are "VAMs". The VAM number designation identifies the die pairs and their condition. Your question should have read ... "Which VAM do I have and is it rare/valuable". Some are, most aren't. Hope this helps.

seatednut is correct in saying each Morgan and Peace dollar is a VAM, to answer the question about it being graded with the VAM attribution ANACS is the only top tiered company I know that attributes ALL known VAM's to date, NGC and PCGS only attribute a handful of them right now so even though it could be a nice find (and a VAM with all Peace/Morgans are) the chances of PCGS/NGC attributing the specific VAM on the label is pretty slim unless it is a specific VAM that is highly collected but if sent to ANACS it can be listed on the label as the particular VAM that it was designated with by Leroy Van Allen & George Mallis (the two that wrote the Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace VAM's)
