Hello all. I just finished readingtthisbook "Pleasure and Profit" and I have to say it is wonderful. I have been a collector for 20 years, and this book opened my eyes to a lot. The author takes you through his typeset and shows his cost and eventual auction prices for his whole collection. He does not sugar coat his mistakes, and really makes you appreciate the coins beyond just their monetary value. Any new collectors, or one who is looking to become more advanced in the hobby should read the book. I truely feel it has already paid for itself a hundred fold in just my recent purchases, and how it has altered my buying habits. Hope you read it!

There are a number of books of this ilk around, that have been published over the years.
Most of them are good in their own way, and are promotional to the hobby of numismatics.

Probably the best way for a collector to make a profit out of numismatics is to NOT be be actually looking to make a profit.

Have the widest horizon you can (that means much more than just U.S. coins), covering all of numismatics and for expensive items, only buy from the most respected dealers who know their own speciality very well. You then keep your coins for at least a decade and if you can, for most of your life.

I have done this, and when I was forced to sell, did so with reluctance. At least the profit was there, at a significantly greater rate than the inflation rate. Perhaps there would have been better non numismatic investments over the same period, but you should not be investing any more than about 5% of your new investment potential into numismatics, anyway.

Dealers can make a profit, but that is usually done by buying at well below the market price, and selling at just a bit below the market price for quick turnover.

That's a good price, even if it's retail.

I hope it is okay to ask, what price level of coins is this book
aimed at?

I have come to realize that I will not buy many coins that cost in the
thousands. I think my comfort level is more, $200 or less.

Would this book be interesting to someone in that buying range?

Looks like an interesting read, I also am wondering about the price level the book is geared towards.

I recently bought this book. Most of the coins he uses as examples are coins that were purchased and sold for over $1000 but the lessons he relates mostly apply to less expensive coins as well.

Half way through the book now, so far I'm enjoying it, and recommend to anyone that is curious as to how a collection is built and then sold. I give it a thumbs up vote. Not the best book, but above average and a pleasing read.
