I have the option to make an offer on this coin from a local in town. He received a full set of wheat cents from his step mother. I am most interested in his 55 double die. It's gorgeous. As much as I love raw coins, I do have a hard time buying a rare coin with the risk of it being a well done counterfeit. I have my idea, but what would you grade this coin and what would you pay. I understand the value is ultimately what's it's worth to me to obtain the coin but I would still like some input. There is a little PMD but this thing is a beaut.

It probably would grade between XF-45 to AU-50, possibly a 53.. Probably more toward the XF-45 range though.
Looks improperly cleaned, and probably would be details. XF45 Details Improperly cleaned & scratches, not sure if they'd include scratches/dings in the title.
Still a beautiful coin! Any idea what's the lowest he'll take?

That was my concern Drew. If I bought it I would like to get it slabbed but I'm afraid I'd invest a sizeable amount of cash in the coin just to have it come back Details, cleaned etc... He turned down 900 in another offer...

If he already turned down $900, I'd pause.

I'd spend $900 going through pennies every day, and continue that process over and over again until you find a 55 DDO But hey, someone did find a 55 DDO, it was several years back. I'm sure several more have been found since, but the probability of finding one is like 1/#8734;, but I bet there's some still circulating... Hey, just an idea...

Errr, apparently coincommunity didn't like me using the infinity symbol, so it replaced it with #8734...

Quote: Pause as in back off? Yes, unless you can work some kind of deal where if you send it out, it's one price for details, and another for problem free. If he won't sell it to you for $900 as is, then it needs to be in a slab imo.

Well, let's say "maybe" because of the potential for photography to be misleading, but I'd call it XF Details Questionable Color and maybe $1000 in PCGS Details plastic. The nicks alone are right on the verge of a Details designation. $900 doesn't leave me enough headroom to consider a purchase. That said, I'd snap this one up if the price were right. The color may be off, but it's a nice color.
