Now ... If your talking GSA dollars ... I am on the other side of the fence. There are a few different groups. 1 - Uncirculated Morgan CC dollars 2 - Morgan CC silver dollar ( bag Mark and toned) 3 - non CC Morgan dollars4 - Soft pack Morgan CC and non CC dollar. There might be some Peace dollars in this group. These have been going up in price the past few years. If they are in the original packaging. By leaving these coins in the OGP .... They have a history that other Dollar coins don't. GSA dollars ... I have 6 .... I will not break them open

I keep any proof sets before 1964 in the OGP. I keep silver proof sets in the OGP, pretty much every thing else gets cracked.

Quote: And I agree with GR58, except with breaking out ALL of the pre 1952 proof sets. I am curious .. have you ever seen a 1952 mint/proof set. Not trying to be negative. Proof 1955 and earlier had box sets. Well 1955 had both box and flat pack. The box set had each coin wrapped in it's own, folded piece of cellophane and stapled to hold them together. Then the stapled set of coins were wrapped in tissue paper. Next time I get a chance I will buy one of the sets .. or at least get pictures. I think most would say that leaving them in the box would not be the best way to store coins. Here is a picture of a 1955 box, I did not buy it because they wanted more ...because it was a unopened box.

Man, I dunno... If I bought that 55 box I'd be tempted to sit down on an Eames chair with a Tom collins, take off my horn rim glasses & dig in!... That thing is a sirens call

Just as long as you don't break up what's inside. I would, too, except mine's bourbon, neat.

I have cracked plenty of proof sets in my day. However, I should mention that this only applies to modern (1968 to date) proof sets. I have no need for 1964 and earlier proof coins coins since the Dansco albums have no specific holes them (with the exception of the 8166 Kennedy half dollar album). Intact modern sets from the late 1990's onward should carry no premium. Since these lenses can be opened and closed at will, there is no guarantee they are, in fact, original. All of that being said, I wold be hesitant, even reluctant, to crack coins out of the original packaging from any 1964 and earlier proof set. Then again, it is very unlikely I would ever care to acquire one from that era.

I hope for your sake that there's a cameo in there. That would be sick.
