I occasionally will look at who else is bidding against me for coins I am interested in. For example, one coin I am currently watching has a high bidder with 17000+ feedback. Are these dealers? It seems like it would almost have to be.

Do they think that they will be able to resell them? Maybe raw coins candidates for certification? The pessimist in me wonders if they will mess with them (whiz or dip) or juice some photos to make the coin look better than it is and then re-sell to some unsuspecting or newbie buyer.

Anyone with any insight?

I suppose it's possible the people with high feedback are unscrupulous coin doctors. It's also possible they are a legitimate dealer that has a list of coins their customers want.....or believe they have identified a variety and/or candidate for certification....or they are collectors in addition to being dealers & need that coin.....or their feedback is from selling something entirely different than coins.....

I've been on ebay since 2002, mostly a buyer although I have also sold a few things and I am only in the 300's in terms of feedback, so when I see someone with 5000 or 6000 feedback, it just feels that that's not just a collector. I mean, 6000 feedback would be 2 transactions per day for like 7 years. It just makes me wonder what they are doing with all these coins they buy. In the old days, you could see the user name of who you bid against, so you could kind of figure it out. Just curious, that's all.

There could be a whole slew of different situations. Perhaps they sell something on ebay but collect coins? They could sell coins and collect. As people mentioned, they could have identified a variety they could sell for more. I see nothing wrong with buying a copper with verdigris and treat it worth verdi-care and sell it for more. I think though those looking to resell would be more interested in a lot than individual coins. Speaking of which I am out of verdi-care and need to buy more.

It's interesting that you mention this. That's why I don't like private listings, because I can get a look at my competition, albeit small look that it is. I don't think too much about bidding against folks with high feedback numbers except that they probably have deeper pockets than me ...dealers, doctors, maybe...
