Nikon, Canon, is ok as its all in the lens (60mm macro or 90mm macro or 100mm macro)nikon, canon or Tamron lenses and most important a tripod or firm stand to stop camera shake. Look at all your options and try before buy if you can

No, do not buy a D3000 for coin photography, though it's a good camera for flowers and bugs, especially if it comes with a decent macro lens at that price. Reason for being so negative about using the D3000 for coins is that Nikon cameras don't come with the tethering software, which will cost a good percentage of the camera price. Much better to get on ebay and pay $150 for a Canon Rebel XS, or $250 for a T2i, which both come with software. Make sure the one you buy has the software disk with it.

If you're willing to do the necessary learning, $700 will put you in a system capable of duplicating the finest images posted here, with $250 left in your pocket to celebrate your achievement. You need to be willing to buy used to meet that price point, and you need to want to become a photographer because it won't be simple.

Thanks for replies. I may try that idea with the IPhone and Santo lightbox for the coins and something else for the bugs and the wild things in my backyard.

If you have an iPhone, then you've already got a surprisingly good tool for the job of shooting coins.

If you still want to do bugs, chances are whatever you get to do the bugs will be even better for coins. The lenses we recommend for dSLR's to shoot coins are less than 10% of the cost of a good bug lens, but they don't do bugs easily.

macdon first hello I used both canon and Nikon. the canon is a great camera you can connect it to your computer and do it all from there. I am working with a Nikon big difference. I wish iu still had my canon I sold it and broke even. I don't know where you live but here is a piece of information you if you are interested. I just missed out at Walmart they are selling out of the canon t3 rebel there price here is 178.00 dollars Canadian . so if you live next to one you will never get a better deal than that. it will more than do the job and the kit lense will do bugs plus coins. have a great one good luck there is not one t3 in my province completely sold out.

Don't let that learning curve scare you, macdon. Learning the periodic table of the elements wasn't so much fun for most of us. Learning to drive was. (Heck, I didn't even wait for the instructor.) Photography is in the fun column.
