I just received this coin that I purchased from an auction with a fuzzy photo. On the photo it looked like there may have been something in the first 0 of the date.

It looks like it is an 1800/79, but I'm not sure what variety or Sheldon number it is.

It's got very nice details, but there is some corrosion on the black parts so I'm sure it would receive a details grade if submitted for grading.

What do people think?

Thanks for your help and opinions.

Beautiful, naked-eye overdate. I'll leave it to my betters to determine which one it is.

I'm at work right now but I'll be happy to attribute it when I get home unless someone beats me to the punch.

Definitely an S-196 which has a rarity of R.1. This coin has fantastic details. Probably EF-40 before it was buried in my opinion.

I got it on ebay for $57 listed as a regular 1800.

Would a coin like this be worth the cost of NGC conservation services?

IMHO....no.

The surfaces are too far gone. You certainly paid a fair price for the detail it has but I would just enjoy it for what it is.....provided it were mine.

There is nothing that can be done for this coin. It is what it is. Still quite nice, IMO.

I think this cent still retains a nice appearance.
In fact, for a ground find (and it seems to be one), it is quite well preserved.
