I dont know why but this common date is speaking to me... from both shoulders if you know what I mean. Thought I would get a consensus about it... Do u like her? Is she undergraded? Is she DMPL? Looks like there might be milky haze in the fields like you see on proof coin? Overall should I buy her? thanks guys!

I have a strong feeling someone played with the light to make it look like that. it is probably in hand barely semi PL.

I don't care for those hazy fields.

if I were to buy it that hit above the arrows which is probably more noticeable in hand would always bother me, not to mention the haze...

It's lit under circumstances which deliberately highlight the frostiness and dark field contrast. I suspect the obverse is PL/DMPL but not the reverse so it didn't get the nod. That milkiness (not like what we see on Moderns; that problem didn't exist then) could just be a break in the reflectivity or it could be haze. I lean toward the former as it follows a pattern typical of coin lighting setups.
A nice coin and likely graded correctly. It won't be that nice in hand, but it sure might be close. This is a situation very similar to toners - you have to shoot them properly to bring the look out, and some call that "deceptive."
Buy it at typical MS65 price - or whatever your tolerance is there - but don't reach for it. It's not an uncommon example for an 1880-S. I expect booming luster, frosty contrast and maybe reflective fields.

I say if you like it, go for it, but don't overpay for it like Dave said.

If she is in your comfort price range, go for it. You are the one that will look at her and love her :)

Without a doubt, an earlier coin struck with that die. Yeah, PL obverse minimum.
If he has a return policy if you don't like it, that's always good :-)

Nice coin. Just yeah, don't overpay please. I agree that lighting was used to exaggerate it. If it really looked like that I think pcgs would have given it at least pl.

PL/DMPL is a direct function of the laws of physics - how far the surfaces will reflect a given thing. It can't be successfully imaged under all but the most exacting circumstances, and I can't say I've ever seen it done to a provable standard. I know I'm not capable of it. I can clearly show reflectivity, but I can't prove that reflectivity over all of the fields on both faces to an exact distance, which is the standard.

Thanks guys, I think if I can steal it for around $100+ I'll go for it. I'm in a buying mood so I might be posting some more. BOTLO

That's an appropriate number if you can do it. I'd be still sniffing at it to about $130 but full stop there. They're common even though this one looks good at the grade.
It went for $87 at Teletrade in 2000 (look up the cert). Quite a statement about coin prices.

Nope, I think I had my max at $110. I'd have too look up what it went for though.
