In the UK I think they stopped officially withdrawing pre-1947 silver coins once the numbers in circulation sank to around 1 in 1000. There must come a time when it just isn't worth paying someone to pull out a few silver coins. But what was interesting in the UK was that Lloyds Bank seemed to have a policy of withdrawing all their silver - I never got a silver coin from a branch of Lloyds, and other collectors commented on this in the now-defunct 'Coin Monthly' magazine. |

The Federal Reserve does not keep used coins at their vault, only new coins and releases them as the demand requires it.
They have contracts with processors like Loomis to pick up from the banks and roll the coins.
If someone goes to the bank coin counter and dumps silver it is picked up by Loomis, ETC, and taken to be processing location, Rolled then orders are filled for the bank and gets back into the food chain for us.
If it is given to the teller and they do not keep it for themselves it is bagged and goes through the same process.
Some banks have their own private vault and their coins do not get mixed with the general population of coins as much so it is easier to clean them out but you can still get lucky and find a recent dump.
So my experience is keep plugging along and hope for a dump.
These dumps maybe 3 coins or 100 who knows.

I agree trapper and halves are something many just have mixed in a jar/bank of coins. The casinos used to give real $$ as well back in the day and some just held on to those as well.

We as a country really stopped using halves as well after 1963. In 1964 the Kennedy half was a big item to hold. And then the end of 90percent silver lead to many to stop use of the halves all together. Holding on to silver for intrinsic value so I think that as well contributes to silver still being out there and people that are unaware dumping |

Awesome boxes I hope the Silver keeps coming in for you.

1- 64 90%
3- 68 40%
I'm happy with any silver, after first 6 boxes were all blanks.

Ran into a collector who was dumping halves today. We got to talking and had a good chat. He was from this board. Small world.
Searched 700$ - nothing but a few banged up nifc

4 boxes today, 1 box was a skunk the other three yielded 9, 90%ers and 20, 40%ers. 2006 Roll of NIFC. Reached two Mile stones, Pulled 2, 76S silver proofs and my first counterfeit coin 71D, weighs 9.5 grams, I thought it was a silver plated one at first. Here are the numbers. That 1971D could be a Magicians coin. Does it have a hollow thud when you try to ring it? If it was struck on quarter stock like mine were it would weigh 8.79g. Most magicians coins I have found weigh 10.4g or so but I did get one a couple weeks ago that weighed the correct 11.2g but still had the thud to it. The reverse will also most likely be rotated if it is a Magicians coin. |
