Hi All. Getting my first ever box of halves friday! Excited beyond belief. So I know silver etc, but here's one question I do have. What do you guys consider the cutoff for NIFC, aka what date should I start keeping the "more recent" halves at.

Today I was at the bank paying the mortgage. While at the window I asked if there were any rolls of half dollars. To my surprise, the teller said yes. I bought one roll, took it home and found a 1954P Franklin.  There was also a 2001D BU Kennedy amongst an array of circulated half dollars. |

I found my first 1970-D in circulation last week...It looks like it was cut from the plastic SMS wrapper only a short time before I found it, which is nice.
Now I'll talk philosophy for a moment:
I doubt I'll ever find another 1970-D, so I suppose I should celebrate. The reason I am tempering my celebration is last week I also bought 3, 1970 SMS sets for $6 each, so is finally finding the 1970 in circulation truly something special enough to celebrate? In my life, $6 is not much money. I could buy many 1970 SMS's each month with no concern about paying my bills.
I was reminded the main reason I CRH is to experience the rush I get when I find something I believe is worth keeping, which is like the random reenforcement a gambler experiences when they win, which indicates I have a gambler mentality.
CRH-ing is definitely not worth the money and effort (mainly time) required to find coins worth keeping, so my question to you is: Why do you CRH?

3 boxes 3 skunks for silver. One box had a gold plated 1973 D with 2 counter stamp that said 1960 1980. Maybe came from a set.

I went to my bank today to order some coin boxes; cents, nickels, and halves. They told me they will order the cases of cents and nickels for me (available next week), but they can not order me any halves. They saw they don't carry them; EVER!
My old option was to have my employer (a retail business) order them for an added fee. The poor success late in finding any silver halves caused me to stop that idea. Looks like I'll have to open accounts in other banks in the area.

i too got skunked today, with 4 boxes. ups and downs, ups and downs. Why do it? I think the fun outweighs any negative. If that ever changes, I may give it up.

and all those skunks I had 30+ boxes once was one of the reasons I decided to pack it in it was a great 8 yr run ( I still do dimes and quarters occasionally) but it was never about the money it was the "thrill" of the find yea its easy to just buy the halves haha but that to me defeated the purpose ok now I just buy them but you get what I mean :D

I Just finished my last 4 boxes for the week and all 4 contained silver.   I ended up pulling 4-90%ers, 1-54D Franklin, 2-64D, 1-64, I also pulled 17-40%ers, 4-66, 9-67, 1-68 and 3-69, 3-72 NO FG, 1-Love token, 1-counterstamp, 1-87P and 8-NIFC 4 of them 2014, and two holed coins. I also pulled my first 1931 One English Penny. 2 of the rolls in box 4 were enders, Love enders. For me I love this hobby, no matter how you look at it if you are not having fun then one should stop doing it. I have never experienced a 30 box skunk in a row, 18 in a row is my record without finding silver, but I found other coins that I like. CRH for me is the thrill of finding the silver, and errors, but mostly silver, its free money! Lets say you search for a year and pull 500-90% coins at today market value, That is approximately $3200 worth of silver, so you decide to hold it for 10 years and silver hits $35 dollars an ounce it has been there a couple of times through the years, well that $3200 turns into $6500 worth of silver, how can this not be worth ones time. $250 face value into $6500 its a no brainer for me. Try putting $250 into a savings account and keeping it there for 10 years you will be lucky to make $30 off of that $250. All we have in life is time why not use some of that time to do something that makes you happy and has the potential to pay big dividends in the future. Enjoy the Pics.
