keep mining arby, you are lucky to be in such a hot zone! I;d love to find a silver proof, that is prob my #1 thing I would like to find. Wish list right now includes
silver proof
any commemorative (but would love an old silver of course)
70d
a barber
this is a dumb question with so many variables involved. But how many boxes would you guess that one would have to search to find each of those? Ive done 72 boxes and not found any of them. not complaining or surprised, just stating facts. Is it 250 boxes to find a commem? 200 for a 70d? 500 for a barber? I dunno, interesting. For those who have found these.... which of the 4 is the toughest, and which is the easiest? Whats the difficulty order?
so, basically everything that is not easy to find lol.
Rcook, thanks for the link, I just bought 5000 wraps to take pressure off of my CU dump bank. I have a bank that will take rolled coins in a bag. Stupid they must be rolled, but it will help spread out the dumps. That price is a no brainer really, discount worked just like you said! I find it amusing that the secret code is SEARCH, lol

I did 4 boxes today, not the same stamp # as last weeks really good box.
box 1 - 2 x 40%
box 2 - 2 x 40%, 1 was a reverse ender
box 3 - 1 x 40%
box 4 - skunk
so, a take of 5 x 40%ers today. I am happy with that, I will take it :-) The reverese ender, I actually opened it to confirm since I could not see the date.

I took me $2mil worth of halves to find a Barber but it was an 1892S so I forgive the coin gods  I have found 5 or more 1970D (after I bought a mint set to fill the hole in my album of course  ). I found an Ellis Island Statue of Liberty half along with 20 or so 40%ers in my first box so I can't help you there. I think I was $1.5mil in before I found a silver commems and it was a 1982 Washington Unc. I still have not found a classic silver half. I found 6 modern silver proofs in 1 box and 2 more later on. I have found 1 1964 and a few of each 1968, 1969, and 1970 silver proofs. I'm sure many SMS 40$ers have passed through my finds. I have found over 40 rolls worth of clad proofs. Now if you want to really find something satisfying look for errors. It takes time but the harder to find it is the more satisfying. I think I have found over 2,000 NIFC, 80 1974D DDO, over 45 1982 no FG, 5 1971D struck on quarter stocks, a few struck trhough debris, a bunch of Struck Through Grease, some MAD's, a few clipped, and just yesterday my first partial collar strike which was also clipped. Your first find in each category is always the best. Each one you find after that just feels like business as usual. After my monster box a couple of years ago I found $1000 in silver in another box 3 or 4 months after that and it seemed like no big deal to me. Since I haven't had that kind of luck for a while now the day I found 100 between 4 boxes felt good. I guess you need to pace your finds and spread them out (which we know is all luck and out of our control) otherwise you get burned out and lose interest. |

1.5 mil being 3000 boxes, wow there is some perspective right there. I believe it would take 14 years to do that at 4 boxes a week. I would have thought you might have found a older silver commem, but that does give me some idea for sure of how tough they can be. 70d sounds pretty darn rare too. and 1892s barber... well that is just awesome and amazing! link for monster box? not sure if I saw it or not. I used to do 20 boxes a week in the old days. Then I had to work 6 days a week a year and a half ago so I had to cut back to 12 boxes a week since then. The twist of fate thing about it was I pick up from one of my banks on Thursdays and the 3rd Thursday of every month is our local coin club meeting. I didn't have time to search it after work like I usually would do so I could make it to coin club so I came into work early as usual to go through a box or 2 and the first one I opened was At the time silver was $30 and ounce and the total melt value for the box was around $2300.   I also found a box of 400 gold plated Obama Bucks one time.   |

Skibdib, I have searched 560,000 coins, 43-walkers, 80-franklins and 2 barbers, 2-70D those are tough to pull. found 160 proofs only 4 are silver, 2 commemorative coins, 19 magic coins, 1 from the 1930's, 89-74D DDO's, As of today I thought I had 8-82P No FG, turns out I only have 4, and have pulled 926-NIFC. I search 12 boxes a week, I started back in Nov 13 and the only regret is I didn't start sooner. I am a bit surprised on how many 74D DDO's I am finding. I didn't think I would find that many. I have truly been blessed in this area. I have been collecting coins a long time on and off, not a professional by any means, I am not a reader so I have a lot of coins but don't know that much about them. I just collect what I like. Jack dude that monster box with all those 90%ers makes salivate. The other box not so much.   Did you keep those Obama coins or sell them? Don't give up Skibdib keep it up you just never know when you will hit that monster box. "LOVE THE HUNT!"

arby, thanks for the feedback. and wow jack yeh that is a monster alright, I remember seeing that. I did read the whole thread, just couldn't recall.
oh I'min no danger of giving up searchgin. Life circumstances may change at some point, or bank circumstances, but until then, I am at it. I also lost 40lbs walking all of these coins around! I'm strong as an ox now! hoping for a continuation box next week of the #### batch I found last week week with 35 silvers in a box :-) or heck, a new contender from a new batch would work too, I dont much care. 30 boxes so far this year, 18 skunks, other 12 gave up 82 silvers.
i ordered a ben whitman book after last weeks Ben finds and I have 13 of 35 holes filled in it from hunting. Ive found 16 bens, so 13 different dates is pretty nice.
also removed 2 bent weird nickels from dump macchine today, I'mpractically a level 2 tech now for these things hahah. sure enough, 2 bent nickels were ruining the whole effort, but all was fine once they were removed. the other time I saw this happen was caused by a partially unfolded paperclip.

That was the point in my numismatic roll hunting knowledge that I put 2 + 2 together that a dump stays together in a box whether silver or Obama Bucks. Using the knowledge I had learned way back and after finding that 10 silver roll which trumps any roll in my monster box earlier this month put yourself in my shoes in the hunt for the Holy Grail box. Based on math or local roll hunting probability stats that grail box would have to be 90% silver (90 rolls worth) Unfortunately I think it was delivered somewhere else on the same day as I have ramped up my boxes since and have been skunked since. |

arby96, who would want to buy an Obama coin? Not me!! The further he is from my mind the better!
Went to my usual bank this afternoon and picked up a couple boxes. First box was a skunk on silver, got I think 3 NIFC out of it. Second box had one lonely 1969 40% and I think 2 NIFC wasn't a great box, but at least I wasn't skunked again. Can't wait for next Thursday, I'm supposed to get a couple more boxes from the bank I got the box that produced (141) 40% and (9) 90%' a couple weeks ago. My usual bank only ordered 2 boxes this week instead of the 4 I got last week. Teller said she was only able to order 2 boxes. I just said OK, I don't want to make them mad where they won't order me any!!
skiddib, glad the link helped you out. I searched several web sites and Diebold had the best deal I could find on the wrappers. I too ordered 5000 and will continue to pick up free ones at the banks when I can find them, but most banks in my area don't have half wrappers.
I also found a bank about 35 miles away that has a coin machine in their lobby that the public can use. If you're not an account holder they charge 10%, but if you have an account it's free. Since I go to that town every couple weeks, looks like I'll be opening an account with them so I can dump some of my coins there. Maybe just open a savings account and put in $100 or so to keep them satisfied.
I started roll searching halves I think in Nov. 2014 and to date have probably searched around 25,000 coins. I've found (37) 90%, (10) Walking Liberty, (17) Franklin, (9) 1964 Kennedy and (1) Booker T. Washington commemorative. Have also found (190) 40% (1) of which was a bicentennial commemorative silver proof. I've also found over 100 NIFC, (2) of them were 1987, No 1970 yet but hopefully soon.

6 boxes. 1 Franklin, 2 beat up proofs, and a sticker. I went to my emergency bank who usually has a box. Because of their hours I can only make it there on a Saturday morning. I have had to work the last 6 Saturdays so I have been missing out on that extra box every week. The last 2 times I went there they said someone had already got it So I go there and the box is open and only has $380 in it. I take it anyways. There is a date of 2/5 $380 so I guess it had been sitting there for the last 2 weeks. Turns out there were 2 Franklins, a 1964, and 3 40%ers in it. I can only image what I missed out in the missing rolls.  Edited by jack jeckel

Jack nice finds, what are the mint marks on the franklins? I was getting some coins together for a trade with a CCF member and pulled this out of a bag I keep all my NIFC, oops missed this one he needs a 2010D and he almost got this one. One more magic coin found.  "LOVE THE HUNT!"

How can you tell you have a Magicians coin? Especially when one egde roll hunts for the most part? Will a Magicians coin be rejected by a coin counter? |
