Thanks for the kind welcome Moderator.

I forgot to mention two (what seemed to me) unusual finds in the two boxes I went through:

One is a well-circulated clad 1/2 Balboa (MEDIO-BALBOA) coin of the Republic of Panama, dated 1975. Exactly the same size as a half dollar (so that is why it got into a roll presumably), and if I recall correctly Panama's currency was tied to the US dollar one-for-one. Interesting that 1975 is a year that the US didn't mint any Kennedy half dollars. Maybe the US mint produced these coins for Panama, since it appears to be the same kind of clad as regular half dollars?

The other is a clearly genuine 1974-D Kennedy half dollar, but on the reverse a copper overlay covering the entire reverse (except for rim) has been annealed or stuck onto it in some way. It has what looks like an eagle holding a snake in its mouth, surrounded by a semi-circular legend "ESTATOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". It weighs around 1/2 gram more than a regular Kennedy clad, so it seems this was just added on top of the existing reverse.

Anyone see either of these before, and/or has further information especially about the second one? I will try to upload pictures when I figure out how to do that.

@Anderson

Regarding the second coin you mentioned, the Kennedy half with the emblem of Mexico on the reverse, it's more likely than not a "Magician's Coin," a coin where one side has been hollowed out and another coin inserted.

The Mexican coin inserted is probably the 20 centavos from 1943 to 1974. With a diameter of 28.5 mm, the coin, once the obverse was ground down to fit, would squeeze nicely into a 30.6 mm half. Look for a gap in between the rim and the Mexican coin. This would also explain the weight difference.

@Atlas 642:

Thanks for the quick response, and you are absolutely right. I previously thought the copper back was attached onto the reverse of the Kennedy, but on checking just now it is just a tiny bit loose. Could not take it out however, even tried to slip a knife blade between the copper and the rim - it is too snug for that. So beyond me what a magician would use it for, since with the white rim no one would be deceived that it is actually a Mexican copper coin. Anyway, assume it is worthless, but somewhat interesting nonetheless.

Anderson, welcome to the CCF, there are a couple ways to get that coin apart, surround the coin with your finger tips include your thumb, around the rim, mexico side down and tap your fingers on a hard surface until the coin separates, or you can sometimes get it apart by dropping the coin into a glass shaking the glass from side to side. but what you really need is a bang ring.

Just to clarify, they did mint quarters, half dollars, and dollars in 1975, but they were all dated 1776-1976.

Just finished up 8 boxes, One of the banks had them early for me since the Banks are Closed tomorrow. 5 skunks out of 8, I ended up with 2-40%ers, 1-52 Franklin, and 1-64D Kennedy, 8-40%ers, 5-67, 2-68 and one is a 68S Proof and 1-69. 8-NIFC all 2015D's, 1-68S Proof 1-72S Clad Proof, and 1-97S Clad Proof, 10 holed coins which 7 of them are double tapped. Haven't seen these before. That 68S Proof is my first early silver proof. I like that 68S proof so much I took a picture of it three times. Wishing you all the best of luck.

thanks jack, and nice finds there arby. That silver proof is cool looking.

They told me that the money order got messed up today, and I ended up with only 1 box. It produced 2 x 40%ers. they are bumping up my Friday order, and I also ordered some from my credit union.
