Yesterday, my brother grabbed 2 rolls from his bank. He managed to pull 1 '64 and 1 '69 from them. This morning, he gave them to me!, along with the remaining halves. I happily gave him a crisp $20 bill for his troubles. Ain't family great?

A PNC bx tonight, and only 3 40%ers. I'm thinking of giving up. Three boxes ago, 80 40%s, 3 Walkers, 1 Franklin, and 4 90%s. Who can explain it?

Oh yeah, severa clad proofs too, but who really cares? Whenever I look at clad coins, I think of how this country and the Fed have ticked away the value of a dollar and get all depressed.

went to two banks today they didn't have boxes of half dollars. they said they would have to order it.
Should I wait a week or so for them to order a box or get like $100-$200 worth of rolls they have?
Thanks.

You have to wait a week for the box anyhow...Why not search through some rolls in the meantime! You might find a few silver or hit a Bonanza! or you could get skunked! Either way....You ain't gonna find the silver if you keep your paper in your wallet!

Ya good idea!
Is there a list anywhere on what's of value and what isn't. I know the different dates that were 90% silver and 40% but anything else?
Don't want to go past a coin that could be worth an arm and a leg haha.

Check this one out. Was out and about today (after having dumped $497.00 in halves) and figured I'd try to get some loose halfs at the King of Prussia, PA Mall. I went into a Citizens Bank, and I asked the teller, "Do you have any loose halves?" Imagine my surprise when he says, "Why yes, 6 dollars worth." I think, OK, let's see .... Then he goes to his tray, there is some fumbling, and then in a rather nervous way, he says, "Actually, there is only 5." This was an older guy, not some teenybopper who doesn't even know Kennedys exist. Clearly, he saw two silvers, and then snarfed them--or am I being paranoid.
Also, spoke with my sister in law today who works as a teller at a TD Bank, and she informed we that any halves they get go directly to the FED--which raises the question of whether the whole concept of getting at one bank and dumping at another even makes sense. Thoughts?

Quote: which raises the question of whether the whole concept of getting at one bank and dumping at another even makes sense. Thoughts? The main reason for not dumping at the bank that you get your halves from is NOT to make them mad and quit ordering halves for you. This indeed makes sense. Be realistic. The only 100% sure method of not seeing the same clad halves again while roll searching is to not turn them in anywhere and just sit on them! Who can afford it? All banks will send back bags of $1000.00 worth to their coin supplier and eventually it will be rerolled and sent back out to another roll searcher (hopefully some silver will be in the mix). In the meantime we need not make our Supplier Bank mad at us and refuse to order anymore boxes for us. It does cost them money to move all those half dollars in and out of their branches. If you have a bank willing to do it for you...you need to protect that, and not make them mad. If you don't order halves and just pick up customer wrapped rolls, then what is the point of buying rolls from the same bank that you dump at? You will be looking through your same rolls again and again! And eventually the bank will get tired of you buying AND returning the same rolls again and again. They may even decide to refuse the transaction, or even worse...close your account (or give you the option to close it out before they do). Some banks can be really harsh. If you have a good relationship with them...protect it!

Good post Ratman.....when I was a kid I would search rolls, and sometimes go back to the same tellers and ask for 'different rolls' of pennies. They were very nice and accomodated me, but I was asked when I was ordering halves from one of the banks if I would bring them back. I immed told them no, as I have a great relationship with them and do not want to ruin it. What I normally do is get them from 2 banks that I have accounts with (1 set up spec for this purpose) and dump at hte third bank, which is a credit union that has only 1 branch where you can deposit but not withdraw unless you go to one of their ATM locations. So I dump there sicne I can't get rolls from them, it's deposited into my account, then I pull the $$ back out via ATM to buy rolls from the other 2 banks. It's a great system. jowillia: Keep in mind that even though TD sends their halves right back to the fed, does not mean that other banks do - some just let them sit in the vault, even for years sometimes. One of my banks told me that they keep what they get deposited for several months before they consider sending them back. So it definitely depends on the bank and may even differ by branch as managers have different way of handling things, unless there is a company-wide directive to send back the coins. You always have top keep an eye out for goodies. Last week I was in the local Walmart buying a Coins Magazine, and the cashier, who was abt 45, old me she didn't have anythnig interesting in the cash drawer. She also told me that almost every Saturday evening she had an older couple who makes purchases with old bills - always dated between 1928 and 1950 and higher denoms - 20, 50 or $100 bills. She is not normally allowed to pull them ,and she can't afford to pull them all anyway, but she was able to get a few star notes with 3-4 digit serials. Lucky her. So I assume you guys know where I'm going this SAt night.....

I searched 2 FED boxes I picked up on Friday and had great results! The first box had 8 40% silver halves. The second box had 36 40% silver, 3 1964 and 1951 Franklin: 40 silver coins from just this one box! I also found 3 S proofs in the box.

Jowillia - in regards to your earlier post about giving up. I (along with several others I'm guessing) would give their right arm for a box that had 80 silvers in it! I would be happy with a 1/4 of that honestly!
With that said the last 2 boxes of the weekend ended up with 1 90% and 1 40% in one box and skunked the other. No proofs or NCIF's, however enjoyed the hunt...
80 in a box, thats absurd...

Great finds Silver Eagle.....I can only hope I get the same results. I am considering holding onto them until I exhaust what is in our savings account, which is several thousand dollars, as the dump bank sends whatever is deposited right back to the Fed or brinks or HF String or whoever - I just know they don't hold onto them. All I have to do is get my wife to believe i'll put the $$ back into the savings. Heck, finding silver in rolls can finance one heck of a collection....It is so easy to sell the coins for 10 times face right now.

mdh - doesn't TD bank send their halves to Brinks? That's one reason I don't search Brinks boxes - I dump all my halves there and I imagine anyone else in the tristate area does also.
