JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

Have been reading your successes finding coins in boxes, bags and rolls. Very impressed. Hunted kennedy rolls, lincoln cents and jeff. nickels in the 80's with some luck. Just started back up this year and am finding customer wrapped rolls very difficult to locate. I will be trying bank boxes in the near future.

I bought a full roll of 2004-D halfs yesterday at a bank. Only roll they had. They are still in the US mint wrapper. Is there any market for these NIFC coins? Will post a pick of them and some silver/proofs I found in Jan. soon.

It just got better! Stopped in a bank on the way home today, asked if the teller had any halves or Ikes. He stated someone had just come in 20 mins ago and bought $70 in Ikes, but they didn't want his halves. I figured they must suck, but asked to see what he had anyway. He looked under the counter and said - "you probably won't want these, they are all the same year........1964."

I tried to hide my joy, and simply stated, "well that is my wife's birth year, so I'll take all you have." He piled up 10 rolls on the counter, put them in an empty penny box for me and I thanked him. He asked if I wanted more if the same person who brought those in brought in some more - and I gave him my card and told him to call my cell if he got anymore Ikes or Halves.

I opened 1 roll in the parking lot - just to check, and it was all 64's. I didn't open the rest until I got home - it was actually 8 rolls of 1964's - many of which look uncirculated or AU. Another roll was all 1966's and the 10th roll had 3 Franklins and 2 Walkers in it, with the rest 64's.

STUNNED to say the least - over $1K in silver for $100. I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

I'll probably ebay a couple of rolls to build my slush fund up as discussed earlier. I hope the teller gets more of these rolls soon!

Score from $200 worth of customer wrapped rolls in early January plus the 2004-D roll from yesterday. 10 nice condition 40%, plus proofs including a 1970-S. Also one silver 10c and 25c from change.

True - it was dumb luck. I wasn't planning to stop, and have no idea why the guy who took the $70 in Ikes didn't want the halves - maybe he is simply an Ike collector. I also had exactly $103 on me in cash (included my $100 rainy day bill).

I can't post pics from this computer - but will later today. The Walkers were 1918 - AG condition and 1941 in VG. The Franklins were 1952, 1957 and 1963 - all in VG.

I'm going to swing by that bank again Friday to talk to that teller again - build the relationship a little. Someone obviously hand rolled these and needed the $$. Maybe they'll need to sell more. I almost feel bad for them because they obviously don't know the value of what they have.

Thanks - yeah, I'm not taking him to dinner. Just going to see if he has anything. I told him I'm collecting and would've asked for nickels too had he not had so many halves. He said he used to collect football cards - so he gets the hobby aspect of it. Hopefully he doesn't switch to coin collecting!
