If you have a 1976 S, or any other S mint, does that mean they are made of 40% or 90% silver every time? (halves only, not other coins).

I didn't realize that any of the 1976 were 40%! I guess I'll go back and make sure none that I found are. Are they just the S?

I hope you guys don't think I'm insane about this question, but when I first started searching it felt like I'd know a silver because it felt lighter (in addition to the "ting" it would make against other coins). Looking at a 90%er and holding it, to me, feels like it is REALLY light. Like, made out of aluminum light. Anyway, as I learned a little more, I learned that they are supposed to weigh MORE than regular coins - so I weighed some and lo and behold, the silver is like a gram more than the 1971+ ones.
I happened to mention to my wife that it is odd that the silver feels lighter, but is actually heavier. She actually agreed and said she thought it was weird too. SO.... since we are both experiencing it I thought I would ask:
1. has this been mentioned before?
2. Do you guys experience this?
3. If I'm not the only person that thinks this, has a reason for this been discussed before?

Wow guys, you are having GREAT luck!! I thought my collection was awesome and that I found a cool hobby that is worth while, and be worth something for my grandkids when they get this stuff, here I find out that my entire collection is what you guys can find in ONE box lol

It is difficult to tell from the photo, but it looks like the Cu-Ni clad layer bled over the copper core when the blank was stamped out. I have seen a number of clad coins that have this affect. Another possibility is that it was plated, although the colour appears to be off. |

Great Finds Everyone! 8 Box total today: SILVER: 4 @ 90% and 6 @ 40% *Numismatically, today I did very good! 90%: 1-1944D Walker, 1-*1997S, 1-1999S and 1-2002S- Silver Clad Proofs.(The 97,99 and 02 each weighed in at over 12.63 Grams!) 40%: *-1-1970D!, 5 others normal 66 to 69. 11 Copper/Nickel Clad Proofs! 1971S,78S,82S,86S,92S,95S,96S,00S,02S,03S and 09S. All of the Proofs and the 70D were concentrated in 1 box, Maybe "Little Johnny" dumped either Dad's or Grandpa's Proof Collection?   |

I just finished my second box. One 1941, one 1967 and a 2008 S. I am going back though all the 1976 I seperated out from my 2 boxes that I checked. I can't imagine any silver but I really didn't realize (except proofs) that they were minted.

What's the best way to monetize impaired proofs? I have come across quite a few...some look great but others have some dings..
