Quote: I found 24 halves that are 1983 P and appear to have been dipped in gold. They also have the small dates 1960 and 1980 on each side of Kennedy's neck. I have no idea what these are. I've seen 1960-1980 or 1960-1985. I have seen them on a dark blue piece of light codbod, with explanation. Once in awhile, they'd sell for a buck, I suspect most dealers removed the card and spent them.

They were some novelty to commemorate the 20th (later 25th) anniversary of Kennedy's election. They sold for about $6 each back in the 1980's.

Thanks for the response! I figured they didn't have much value over face since I found so many of them. Wasn't sure what the small dates were but anniversary of Kennedy's election makes since. I'll probably hold onto a couple since I think they are kind of neat looking and spend the rest.

Moderator Warning: No one wants to see the JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters topic LOCKED! So please, stick to discussing the coins and avoid discussing what is or is not the purpose of a bank.

I didn't find any silver, but I found what looks like a die clash. You can see what looks like wings coming out of JFK's head. What do you guys think?

I have a chromed 84 with those dates counter stamped on it. I posted a thread on it but no one mentioned that. Now I got it. :)

At lunch I was dumping some dimes and nickels and asked my usual question about halves and "old large-size dollar coins", and they had $9 in halves, but they were all clad. Stopped at another bank on the way back, asked the question and three different tellers rounded up two loose halves and a taped-together wad of paper with "$10" written all over it. One of the halves was a 1968-D.
As I was walking out of the bank, I noticed that the wad was the wrong shape for $10 worth of halves. I opened it up and found ten Ikes!

I stopped at 13 banks on a road trip and was only able to find $160 of halves. Nothing worth keeping either.

I was able to pick up a roll at my bank, figured it was some turned in since the bank doesn't deal in halves, found 18-1971's and 2-72's! Never seen that many 71's in a roll before; no way it could be just a random incident but can't figure why someone would save that many 71's.

In my area, you can find almost flawless 71 and 72s. I just toss them back.
Some of them rival the nice shiny 2001s I find as well.

I think 1971 is probably the most common date I find. When I first started filling my book, I sorted out the $500 box of halves I had by date so I could pick the best condition ones. I'm sure there were more than one solid roll of 1971s in my dumps.
