JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

Went to a bank I hadn't tried before and they had halves. I bought $90 worth which was all the cash I had with me. Found 2 silver-clad plus a 1950-D Franklin in nice condition with dark toning. That's the first 1950 half I've ever found so I was pretty pleased. I'll go back next week with more cash and see what else might turn up!

Non silver half dollars in circulated condition are worth 50 cents.

Halves dried up around where I live a long time ago. Still amazed others are still finding stuff. Here, you might find 1 40% once in every 5 boxes. I suppose the most recent issues have low mintages, but the series as a whole is boring in my opinion, so I don't search them anymore since the silver left.

Greetings - This is my first post. I have just started searching halves myself and the last box I went through - well, every one of the Halves was a 2001. All 1000 coins were 2001. Some were like brand new hard edges and no scuff marks or scratches of any kind - nice. And then, there were the others, scuff marks scratches discoloration and then the ugly ones. I kept $200.00 worth of the AU types and returned the other $300.00 to the bank. I open one box a week (time permitting) and have found only a few 40%'ers and one 1964 in bad shape. I'll keep going through them because what the heck - it beats panning for gold in the mountains - I'm just digging for silver in the Bank's own vault and hope to find a vain one day ... 8^)

I stopped at 4 banks yesterday while I was running around. I picked up a total of 1 half dollar!

At least it was a 1965!

Out of $17.50 in halves (all looked like they have just gone through a fire or had improper storage, the edges were black as sin), nine were silver clads (1x '66, 5x '67, 2x '68-D, 1x '69-D).

I've read every post in this thread. I just signed up to post that I've been searching my change and asking for halves at banks now for a few months. I've only ever gotten a silver nickel in change and never had any luck with halves. I tried to get Metro Bank and a local credit union that I use to order me halves. No go.

For the past 3 weeks or so I've been trying to get a box of halves at BofA. Each time there was a different excuse. First, the order didn't go through for any of the branches coin, including my halves. Second, the box was in another branch. On the third try, I went in and the teller told me that they got the box in finally! However, had she not pressured the delivery guy to get my box of halves that day, I would have been picking up a box of quarters! Turns out, they put in the order as a box of quarters. So the delivery guy ended up calling around to different banks, and went on a special run for my box of halves! Ugh, what a nightmare. What if I depended on that coin for a business? It seems like they didn't know how to handle a simple coin order.

Long story short, the teller was very, very apologetic and I basically said it wasn't a big issue. When I picked the box up, I asked her if she could make this order on a regular basis and she said absolutely. So I'm going to get a box a month, for now. Hopefully they can fill those orders for me.

In the end, the box yielded not a single silver coin. However, I got a ton of hole fillers. The most intesting finds were a gold plated 1976 and a 2011D in great condition! I'm also going to start a 1986+ book too. I was expecting at least a single silver coin, but I guess it wasn't a total waste with what I found.

2 boxes this week and 2 more to go. Found 1 90%, 7 40%, a 2000 proof, a really beat 74DDO, and 1986 Statue of Liberty Commemorative proof. That's my second commemorative from circulation (the first was a Stone Mountain)!

I've noticed an uptick of silver since August - still no huge scores, but I like the way things are moving and I hope they continue. I think I'm averaging a 40% every 34 rolls and 90% every 136 rolls, but recent average seems higher. Still looking for 70D and 87P for my circulation collection, and a Barber for my 20th century circulation type set.
