JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

finally got around to joining this great forum I've been getting half dollar boxes for a few months and so far hasnt been going to well ha

got 2 boxes today and had this weird inspected by stamp and everytime I receive one of those boxes its always bad news ( loads of marked coins - that annoying lombardo so many of his marked coins


found 1 40% a 1969 oh well anyone famiilar with these inspected by stamps? stringer and sons box

I've been searching since 2008 very regularly. I agree that silver is still being dumped back into circulation by people who stashed it or those who cash in Grandma's rolls from the dresser.

But, I actually have another theory. I think the larger groups of coins we come across in circulation are possibly stolen and deposited/spent by crooks. They are the ones who can't risk walking into a coin shop, and 50 cents a piece is enough for them.

Think about it, if you are crazy enough to keep your stash of silver at your home, someone may eventually walk away with it. And where will it end up? In a box of halves coming to a branch near you as a dream box for someone else.

Tellers have told me that teens are usually the ones turning silver coins in at face value. I had one teller say they advised a teen to take the coins to a coin store, and he refused and deposited them anyway even though they said the coins were worth much more at the coin store.

What do you guys think? Am I crazy?

I figure once they go through the bank and back out into circulation, it is OK to pick them back out, but I think it is possible that is where many of them come from.

Yes I'm surre that happens both stolen and unknowing. Seems more so with halves than dimes and quarters. Although we received 2 1930s quarters in change recently.

Well the rolls I got this past week I am holding them until the end of the month when I have to pay a bill. In this form I won't spend them. I also made friends with the head teller at one of my branch banks and she told me to give her a call and see if she had any more for me.

Just wondering if casinos in NJ have any slots with real coins?

The casino here doesn't use halves for slot, they are strictly for blackjack only.

I did box 4 and 5 tonight. Both turned up no silver. The first box was a total skunk... not even any hole fillers. The second box was pretty interesting... I got a gold plated 1976, a bunch of gold toned from late 70s early 80s, and a handful of NIFC... and a few hole fillers.

Honestly, when I went to pickup my coin order this week (2 boxes of halves, one nickel and one dime box) I was thoroughly surprised how HEAVY it was! And now I have a ton of coins to dump... Do you guys typically hang onto your current batch of coin until you get your next order or just dump and hope they don't end up in your next box?

I didn't search the dime box yet, but I did post in the nickel thread about finding a 1943-P Silver and a 1920-D Buffalo! I might stop getting halves since I've been so skunked with them and it feels like a waste in favor of nickels/dimes... Not sure yet since I didn't sit down with the dime box yet.
