My CU said they can't order halves for me.... not fun.

Odd you would say that.
I recall my CU saying they could not order them, yet another branch of the same CU said they can
have the Fed pick up halves once they acquire $1000 of them.
I would say if they can have them picked up then they can likely order them. I believe some CUs simply
say they cannot because they do not want to deal with the returned halves once someone is done searching them.
This being said, I can see it from their point of view especially if they are a smaller CU with a small vault. Halves may sit there a while and take up space until they have enough to be picked up. Also, unlike smaller denominations, most businesses and individuals do not ask for halves.
I am lucky so far in that I have one of my banks order them and then try to spread the limited dumps out over different branches over a few weeks time.

most small branches' vaults are nothing but safe deposit box vaults. they keep all their change in smaller wall safes like a typical home security vault. they usually have one wall of these maybe 12 total, and priority goes to change they carry normally.  |

I have found that buying bank boxes varies even from branch to branch. One branch decided to charge me a $7.50 fee but will not charge my account for the box of nickels I got until the end of the month. Another I went to today did not charge me the fee and wanted cash on delivery. The teller was very nice and even carried it out to my vehicle.
My next two boxes of halves are coming in on Thursday afternoon. Can't wait to unwrap all of those beautiful rolls and see what presents I find this time. Hoping to add some more silver to the kitty again. Found some other keepers from the last batches besides the two silvers.
Was going to go back up to Garner on Friday but plans changed. I will be leavng on Sunday evening to go back since some friends want me to pet sit for the weekend. I can almost buy a whole box of nickels from the cash they give me as a thank you. It's no real hardship to wait a few more days since I love watching the huge 65+ inch tv screen and free cable and movies. Actually, it will give me a chance to finish sorting my halves and dump nearby in a different bank's coin counter.
Wonderful finds you all have been sharing! My oldest half so far is the 1966 in very beautiful condition.
It will be interesting to see what the Clayton branch's coin box buying policies are. Of course, there are also the ones in Garner, Raleigh and Cary too.

My teller held $16 in halves for me. Said they tried to call but I didn't pick up. Updated my phone numbers for them.
I could tell as she was counting them they were 99% sure skunk, but I bought them anyway, to say thank you, and to encourage her to hold whatever she gets for me. Heading to another bank who said someone dropped off a bunch of proof halves. We'll see!

1964 proofs don't have any s mintmarks. and sms don't have any either. other than that they should be s mint.

Wow that is a real beauty! And I got my very first proof coin! It's a 1994 S Kennedy half. I'll post a picture later. |
