I've had long conversations with a vault teller at a major bank who did some pretty intense research on trying to 'buy out' the half dollars to get to older stores. Her research told her there probably are some boxes that haven't been touched for years but echoed Bman that it would be impossible to get to them. The piece of this pie that we don't see is the sheer volume of halves being hunted. If there were a way to organize 30% of half hunters, you might be able to get somewhere. Unfortunately, there isn't. You might be able to get some people on the banwagon...verbally. But what happens when you get half way in to this buyout...all the hunters who've used their entire bankroll to buy halves will start dumping early so they don't miss out on the potential treasure hunt. Even if you were able to monopolize several million halves, you would still be in the middle of boxes that are being circulated.
All that said, you can still hit a monster box...even today. Several of us have had decent boxes.
I know several people here have thought...what if we get to the bottom of the vault?!?! I'm guessing all of us have. But unfortunately, that's not going to happen.

$24,000 in rolled halves? Wow, I feel sorry for other collectors in your area. That bank will likely cut you and them off very soon with that sort of volume.

Just picture that dusty pallette in the back though, filled with nothing but franklin, walker, barber, and those "new fangled" 64 kennedy's. There's a half an inch of dust on it and you can barely read the $500 printed on the boxes.
Please expand on your conversation - I'm interested in hearing more of her theory.

Most of her information was from people who worked with/through the various couriers. This is all third (maybe forth or fifth) hand knowledge. She spoke of some location in Oklahoma City. Had heard from several people that the main vault was huge. Not sure if this was a Federal or private location. She didn't give me any kind of reference to explain how big this place was but was told that the amount of currency and coin at this location was truly unimaginable. Her various courier contact told her that all the halves just get circulated by half hunters, and a few people dumping half dollars at banks. Some boxes may get shuffled and set in the vault for a few years but not likely to stumble on to a box that's 20, 30, 40 years old.

woohoo took my $500 in halves to get changed out and they gave me $668 back, and only found 1 40% in my new box

Isn't it called stealing if you take $168 from the bank that's not yours? They will probably find the error anyways.

... If they find the error, how will they know know who to charge it to - if it's not his bank. If it is, you'll get a balance adjustment soon enough...lol

im sure the holy grail is also buried somewhere within those "old" boxes  no halves for me this week the bank forgot to order them figures this would happen since its a new bank I'm dealing with now - oh the withdrawal |

oops lol it was $568 I got back, I started at one branch and my coins broke the machine so they paid me 413$ and gave me the rest of my coins and I went to the next branch and they gave me 155$ for what was left in the bag...

Do the courier companies, ie Brinks, hoild all these boxes, or are they mostly held in Fed vaults?

Looking for a job? How about applying for a coin vault clerk at Brinks, and then reporting back to all of us as to where the good boxes are?From the Brinks website...

Should be receiving my first two boxes in about two weeks now this coming Thursday.
The Senior Teller will be on vacation next week so I will not be able to ask her to order them then. Hopefully, two boxes will keep me searching for a while. I was going to ask for four boxes, but I sensed this was not a good idea this week. Not exactly sure why, but I sensed it all the same.
