If 8 boxes yielding 2 40% is "Bad bad bad" what is 35 boxes without a single silver? That phrase would describe my situation.

It's been slow here. I was out of town last week, and saw a bank. My wife didn't want me to stop, but she was happy when I showed her a 40% I found. I've only found one since then, and I've been looking everywhere!

However, one teller, who had some loose halves, asked me to open an account so I could order a whole box. He said I could even dump them there if I wanted.

Some, even one, is better than none.

Aloha all I am new to the site and have recently started coin roll hunting this is my 2 month stretch... I started by going to a few banks asking for half dollars 1st day after my 3rd bank teller came back and I could hear the silver clucking in her hand she gave me $11 worth of halves and 8 were silver :D the search was on

I proceeded to check banks whenever I had day off and found a few more silvers here and there ... Then I was at a bank asked the teller who said she didnt have any although she could order them for me ( I didnt know that was possible) she told me they come in $500 so I ordered $500 worth .. A week later they arrived she said I am sorry they are loose so picked up a bag full (wife though I was crazy) and as I was pulling handfuls from the bag the silver was piling up :D turned up 53- 40% and 18- 90% and also 6 franklins ,needless to say I went right back to the bank and ordered $1500 . this time they only delivered $1000 and they were in boxes scored 18 40% ,ordered again and have been waiting 3 weeks for them to arrive

in the mean time emailed another bank I have account with and ordered $1500 they also sent $1000 also in bags although they were in rolls (in bags) 1st bag of 500 were the ugliest bunch of kennedys I have seen many of them had a weird green paste on the coins .not to mention I spotted 6 of my own rolls I had dumped at a different bank in the bag with the others so 1st bag was a skunk ,( I had also gotten someone elses dump in that bag)marked rolls

the 2nd bag identical looking rolls I for sure though I was getting skunked again turned up 11 40% and 5-90% as well as several proofs and nficthe coolest thing about this batch although was about 15-16 rolls that were all the same coins in perfect uncirculated condition at least 10 rolls were mixed with only 1974D /1971 and 1976 , and a few rolls of all 1976 and all 1971
i havent checked the 1974 for double die yet as need a loupe although someone was for sure keeping these
.thinking maybe they are all double dyed :D (still wondering why the 1971 were in there as nothing special about those is there ? ) The 2nd bank here told me they can no longer order for me and it was a one time shot :( so waiting for my initail bank to come through , wish I could search a few boxes a week although being on an island I guess they dont bring them in from the mainland when ordered and wait to get from wherever ... hoping I dont run out and only have mine to search over ,also called loomis to see if I can buy direct as I own a business ,She said no and then she was very suspicious and annoyed that I would dare ask :D what banks they deliver to as I wanted a different pickup and dump bank that uses different carriers
btw - wife still thinks I am crazy :D

Nice finds! I guess there aren't many roll hunters on Maui. However, like you said, being on an island, you don't have an endless supply of coins to search.

mauuijay, Congrats on the great finds! My guess is when you got those first bags, that they had been sitting in vaults on the island for a long time. It reminds me of when I was young , my grandfather took me to small banks in little towns and brought enough money we were sure to clean out their vaults of halves (ther were glad to be rid of them). We used to get quite a bit that way. And this was before the record high silver surge in the 80's. Fifty dollars (38.50 per dollar of silver coin) was a lot more back then than it is now. So you can guess where a lot of the common silver went.

Haven't found a bank that has a steady supply of halves, but I got a 40% JFK half from a teller's tray at face value

My first silver half dollar!

For those of you wondering, the year is 1967
