Silver is silver. That 40% is worth more than face value of 50 cents. Yes keep it.
Typically, It is a rule to NOT clean your coins. Improperly cleaned coins will drop in value drastically. Remember, Never clean your coins!

That being said...It really depends on what you meam by green and gunky. That 40% is made out of 60% copper. Copper coins are subject to "verdigris", a sort of chemical reaction. If it is verdigris, the reaction needs to be stopped...See the cleaning and storing forum.

I hope you thanked him very much! The silver melt value is $205.00 on those 2 rolls (as of fridays closing spot price). If they are Uncirculated they could be worth more. Are they P or D mint? (on 1964 the D mintmark would be on the left of the stem of the olive branch on the reverse. no mintmark for Philly). There are also DDR (double die reverse) you can look for. I will try to find the website I was using and post a link later! Remember to handle all your coins by the edges and don't touch the surfaces, finger prints have a nasty habit of showing up on coins years after being touched. If these are Uncirculated you don't want that to happen!

Philly rolls? That had me thinking about sushi.

I bought two rolls from a bank yesterday in Casa Grande AZ, and like the previous two rolls from that bank last month, no silver.

There was an amusing moment with them later on at the Taco Bell drive-thru. My girlfriend handed over a $2 bill and five of those halves to get us two large iced teas, and it took three attempts for the poor guy to figure out it was $4.50 we were handing him. He thought they were dollar coins and he kept trying to give us back three of them.

I had 6 skunk boxes over the weekend. Then I got a box with 6 40%ers a 1964 and a 1953 Franklin. Plus I got some customer rolls and found
54 40%ers and another 1964. I have alot of boxes on order this week.
Ratman, I looked at that link with the Brinks rolls. Unbeleivable.
I hope I can get something like that sometime.

Work that bank over til they run out of halves (You're doing good and you never know if another Bennie will pop up). Then find another source, but check back with that bank every week or two! Somebody may turn in another good hoard!
