Hello folks, I happen to come by opportunity to purchase 1881 Canada large cent with Micro D, wondering population in mint state if anyone has one. Also what would be the estimate to pay for 1 in let say ms62?

I don't believe ICCS attributes it on holders (CCCS does if you ask) so it won't show up in their pop report. I believe I saw someone trying to put together a census of these coins somewhere.

I think I will send to CCCS if it's worth it. Tipically I would not send a 100 dollar coin but I am hoping this is nice in hand as in photos. Will post more photos when I receive the coin.

The ICCS population report for 1881 Vickies only has one listing for all varieties.
There are a total of 218 registered in mintstate.
I will leave the value up to
someone more knowledgable.

The coins are a little scarce, but not really that hard to find. I think that I've had 7-8 of them, going back to 10 years when that variety was discussed quite a bit, along with the "spur" N. I think that I have 4-5 still, having given some to friends that lacked them, but nothing in the condition of yours. Nice coin and CCCS will cert it, since they have in the past.

That' a beauty small cent guy! I'm guessing ICCS did not mark micro D on the flip? Any guess on the potential value of coin like that.

No comment on it.

I suspect that a red Micro D would attract some serious interest at an auction. What it would go for would probably depend on the egos and wallets of a small handful of people. Very hard to predict. This doesn't have registry set appeal yet.

But if I do sell, and I likely never will, I would tell the auctioneer to put a really high reserve on it and see if anyone bites. $3000? Maybe more.

It wasn't really a catch. Came from my grandfather who started collecting in the 1880s (he and my Dad had kids at a late age). I wish he had been more of a hoarder!
