Very nice - you went on a serious shopping spree it seems. The F.E cent with the Cud is very interesting, not to mention the proof Trade dollar. |

Glad you guys like the Trade dollar as much as I do. It was the first coin I looked at upon entering the show and the last coin I bought upon leaving. It was the single most expensive coin I have ever purchased and I really needed to think about whether I could afford to pay that much. I kept thinking about it during the entire show and, since I didn't see another example anywhere else I finally decided to spend the rest of my cash and buy it. If anybody's interested, it set me back $2250. I believe that's a fair price for it, but I just didn't want to let it go. |

I don't know if I'll ever do it again, but last year I decided to save up and go big this year. It's the only show I attend.

Stunning group of coins.
Never even knew of the Hudson commemorative. So what exactly is the 'squid guy' on whale depiction supposed to represent?
As for the balance of coins and dollars spent. When I started I used to go the quantity not quality route as I never wanted to drop a great deal of cash on individual coins, but have long since changed my mind in that regard. I'll save up for a single coin and purchase a nicer specimen ... just have fewer net coins in the collection, but better examples.
Like some say, you're just the caretaker of the coin until some other individual takes the baton. And if you ever need the cash, the nicer stuff always seems to be in high demand (and typically appreciates as evidenced by PCGS auction history) should you ever need to recoup your initial investment. That's more than I can say for my 'so called' professionally managed retirement account.
So enjoy ... nobody said coin collecting had to be an inexpensive hobby, but it sure is a heck of a lot of fun.

Apparently, the squid guy is supposed to be Neptune. The entire image is taken directly from the city seal of Hudson, N.Y.

Interesting.
After doing a little research, apparently Hudson was founded by 18th century Dutch Colony whalers so that probably explains the commemorative and the city seal to some extent. Only 10,000 coins minted and 8,500 initially purchased from the mint by two coin dealers for profiteering. Scarce coin from the get go back in 1935 and still today.

Everything in the shape of a coin is collectable it seems. The Silver Eagles I see are highly collectable and I can see why since the design is beautiful. Funny to pay 35 bucks for the same silver you can buy in 2015 for $20. This is human desire to collect and categorize. This is part of our DNA. I wish I was 25 years old and just starting collecting coins. The increase in value for some is amazing. I was reading a post where a poster here bought common Saint-Gaudens in 1960 for just $60. However, everything else has inflated as well as I look out the window to see the new house being built for $750,000 where house stood that sold for $15,000 in 1960.
