All right, I posted pictures the paper money of the paper money I picked up today at the Bay State Coin Show over in this thread, but here comes the coins. Most look much better in hand due to my inability to take decent close-up shots through slabs... First up is a raw 1857 Flying Eagle cent with an interesting Cud on the wing that I purchased as an upgrade for my 7070 album: Next, I figured it was finally time to actually get a certified 1909S VDB Lincoln Cent. I couldn't afford one in RB, but this one's still pretty nice: Next, as part of my never-ending quest to own a proof example of every U.S. coin ever made, I picked up a nice Three Cent Nickel in PR65: Next, although I don't really collect commemoratives, I've always wanted to get one of those funky Hudson Commemoratives with the squid-headed guy riding a whale: And finally, the piece de resistance, a proof Trade dollar that I could actually kinda sorta afford [I'm still looking for a proof Liberty Seated dollar and a proof Twenty Cent Piece to round out my collection, but the ones I saw at the show easily cost more than all my other purchases combined]:

How do you get proof coins if they didn't make proof sets until '36?

They aren't parts of sets. The mint has been making proof coins for collectors since the 1800s, usually in much lower mintage than regular "business strike" coins of the same year. For example, they only made 1,541 proof Trade dollars in 1879.

I like the Flying Eagle with the wingtip and letters void of metal and the breast feathers full. Nice haul! nlp
