Picked up a couple Morgan dollars today. I wanted to get some opinions on the 1894 S because it is a better date, so may as well post the 1901 S also. Of course the 1894 S looks better in hand. I bounce and forth between high XF to low AU. I am always interested to what others think. 1894 S 1901 S

I don't see the 1894 going lower than AU50 and I'm at 53 for it. The obverse "looks" worse but they don't wear only on one side. What's happening at the junction of the eagle's right wing and body? Have a look for doubling at top outside right of the 9, the very top of the 4, and inside the bow on the reverse. The mint mark is set a bit right, and those would confirm the new VAM-10, designated last year. Otherwise it's VAM-2, which has a tilt to the right that *should* probably be visible here but isn't. I love the color even though it is probably unoriginal. I can't imagine that cleaning having been done in our lifetimes.
The 1901 is 30-35.

1894-S: I see just the slightest abrasion on Liberty's hair above the ear, and also on the tip of her Phrygian cap, so even though the reverse is outstanding, I think it's AU58.
1901-S: Enough wear that I don't see how it tops XF45, and as the cotton bolls look a bit smoothed, it might actually go only XF40.

AU58 on the 94 S. Lots of doubling in the denticles on the obverse.
VF on the 01 S.

AU55 on the 1894 S, VF30 on the 1901 S.

Before I read the other responses, I'll say AU50 for the 94S and F16 for the 01S.

I like seeing the opinions for this coin leaning to the AU grades.
There is a big price jump from XF to AU

I considered that in my grade. Yes, I go harder on Conditional Rarities. This coin is much nicer than any PCGS 53 I saw on Heritage.

I really like the color of the 94-S. I'm still missing that one.

This 1894S is causing me to think to much. Looks like it is a nice coin. Right now it is in my full Morgan set. It is better than the 1894O that I have in my Date set. (Putting better grade coins in date set) (( I have 3 1894O, lower grades) I also have been wanting to have some of my better, more expensive, Morgan's slabbed/graded. Sometimes this coin collectiing is hard

I'd give the 94-S an AU 55. Very nice coin. The 01-S is VF. (If I remember correctly, you also have a 96-O from last year that I recommended sending in for TPG'g. Did it ever get sent in? Curious minds (mine!) want to know. THAT 96-O had potential to be a killer coin as true "Uncs" are tough to find.)

Your right I do have that 1896O that I need to send in. I am so bad about getting things done.
I signed up for NGC last May. I still have the five free submission that I need to use before the middle of next month.
I better pick five coins and get them sent in this week.

Yes ... I would like it very much if this was a 1893 S
But as is a 1894 S greysheet AU $400/$440
Just looked at the greysheet 1893 S AU $19,000/$21,000
