This is post-strike damage. The metal was scraped up.

Note how from "OF" on the rim, you can see the metal pushed to the left that made the raised area on the rim. Same is true on the area above the 3rd-4th columns. It is also scrapped that direction to the left also. Not a die issue, but a coin issue.

In any event, nothing not attached to the rim can be called a "cud." I was gonna call it a jewelry mount until I slowed down to read coop's post.

But I though Ken Potter's images of a split die would give us a better idea of a Cud:

It is a lot more than just a chip off the design, but a real die issue.

I'm still getting burned regularly, usually very publicly in these pages. There's a fine line between thinking outside the box and leaving the box at warp speed in the wrong direction.
