I dug this recently and can not find any info on this coin.
It was in 6-7 inches of soil in an area I have been finding Civil war relics. The relics I am finding are around the same depth... which would suggest that it would have been counterfeited around the same time period or before.
Coin is marked... 8R.PI.1829.O.R.10D.20G. The assayers initials for that time period should have J.S. Also the "Ring Test" is a weak ring, not prolonged and bright.
First Question... Should I clean it and if so how?
Second question... Is this a common counterfeit for that period?
Any info would be appreciated.

Hello Picks01 and welcome to the forum. Your coin is a great find, congratulations on digging up such a great piece of history. The coin is most likely a counterfeit, when one of our members Bob Gurney sees this he will be able to give you more information. In the mean time, could you weigh the coin and do a specific gravity test on it to determine the silver content? Instructions for SG testing are easily found online.

Thank You for the welcome. I can take the coin and have it weighed at a local jewelry store,
but I personally don't have scales to do the SG test. I will see if I can get the info you are stating asap.
I think I will go ahead and clean it in acetone and go from there. Thank you again for your reply and hopefully
I can find out more about this coin. It is interesting to say the least.

Bob Gurney can of course chime in after me as I only spent two years with these C&R CC's and he has spent 50 years + ... however preliminary results have shown this so far based on my research and a few conversations with BG:

1. Most of these issues seems to be silver electrodeposited and not Sheffield Plate (SP) as are the Bust types seen in the Amazon Book for the GNL Type 1 SP's.

2. The advantage of electrodeposition is that the silver can be deposited on any metal substrate - remembering Sheffiled types prefer copper over brass or bronze.

3. Leading Mexican numismatists IMO are still in the dark ages on all of their counterfeits. They are not appreciated - they are avoided and there is no real respect to own or sell these issues. Sort of like the 1950's with Eric P. Newman and his Bungtown English/Irish 1/2d's from England and starting from this bottom level. Time will improve this unfortunate situation - decades unfortunately.

4. Most dealers if you believe me in (3) simply call these cast bronze pieces - sometimes they will mention silvering. Whatever ...

5. Some appear as silver wash, some Sheffield and some electroplated Ag. Not sure of percentages and probably at 60 years old never - will. LOL.

6. They come in brass and bronze predominantly as host coins and most APPEAR as not being silvered as it has been removed with age but traces show up with XRF - I have not encountered many high copper types yet but I have only analyzed about 30 examples by XRF. I expect most are brass or bronze - still in its infancy ...

7. As with all Mexican coppers many are environmentally hit hard for obvious reasons (i.e., climate and the latitude). Even when you examine the Cu REV stuff - how many CLEAN mint state issues do you see with perfect 95-100% patina with traces of mint red?

Thanks John for your response.
I have attempted to soak it in Acetone for 5-6 hours and for some reason the dirt does not want to remove itself from the coin..
In a couple of spots where it did, I can see silver beneath and it seems to be fairly bright. So if there is plating on it ... it seems to still be there or quite a bit of it anyway.

Put it in boling water for 15 minutes. Report. Will not harm it.

Also freeze it for 24h. Rinse/Boiling water for 15 minutes. The ice peels away the soil. Sometimes.

Of course a personal ultrasonic machine works best if you are a serious detectionist.

I have spoken recently at NJ's largest metal detecting club. Interesting group ...

Acetone will only remove organic compounds, not encrusted dirt. By all means do not rub or scrub the coin in an attempt to clean it. Never tried the boiling water idea myself, let us know how it goes if you try that.

What a awesome find! It's a contemporary counterfeit and should have value as such, very interesting piece of history. I do some detecting myself with the Garrett AT Pro, what do you use?

Hopefully swamperbob chimes in on this one!

Thanks John for the suggestions. Boiling didn't seem to do anything... Trying the freezing part now.

Hey Realpeso. Thanks for the post. I just started relic hunting and recently purchased my first detector. I ended up buying the Tesoro Cibola.
It takes some getting use to because of the soil type where I live. Red clay is no fun... lol
