I am in the process of going through some of my Lincolns for some upgrades. I bought this guy sometime ago out of a MS 62/63 TPG holder.
As from gaining knowledge on this wonderful site, I've came to conclude that it is a LDS MS Lincoln. I do need help in identifying if that is a rim Cud or rim lamination from 9- almost 12 oclock on the obverse side. Thanks a bunch!
Quote: Yes Late to Very Late Die State and it does look like a large rim Cud. possibly two rim Cuds that joined.
Given that it doesn't even reach the inner rim at some places - while fully reaching the very edge all around - isn't this maybe a collar break rather than a die break? I'm asking rather than answering.
I think I'm going to coin the phrase "Smudge State" to describe the state of a die this worn out.
No the collar goes around the die, if the collar cracks or breaks the result extends out BEYOND the diameter of the coin. What creates the flat portion of the rim is a little "step" at the edge of the die. If you were 2 mm tall and you were walking across the field of the die and get to the edge, if you look down there is a short drop, a little ledge, and the another drop that is the neck of the die. The edge of the coin is created by the collar, the flat rim by the little step, and little drop to the step creates the vertical drop from the flat rim to the field of the coin. If something breaks off the step but doesn't damage the field you get a raised lump on top of the flat rim, a rim Cud. And that is what you have here.
