NGC - The March of Dimes Special Silver Set, which includes two new Roosevelt dimes and a Proof March of Dimes commemorative dollar, goes on sale May 4. Learn about NGC's special label and pedigree for these coins. Special submission instructions must be followed.

The US Mint will begin sales of the eagerly awaited March of Dimes Special Silver Set on May 4. It includes the first-ever Reverse Proof Roosevelt dime, a Proof 2015 Roosevelt dime from the West Point Mint and a Proof 2015 March of Dimes Dollar, also from the West Point Mint. Only 75,000 sets will be sold and, as a result, these two new Roosevelt dimes will have the lowest mintage in the entire series.

To mark the release of this low mintage set, NGC has created a special label that features a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, along with a facsimile signature and his famous quote: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Coins from the March of Dimes Special Silver Set will be encapsulated with NGC's new Roosevelt label and a MARCH OF DIMES SET pedigree.

To receive this special label and MARCH OF DIMES SET pedigree, special submission instructions must be followed.

Submission Instructions

Coins must remain in the sealed US Mint shipping boxes, and the entire unopened package must be sent to NGC for certification. NGC must open these boxes in order for the coins to qualify for the MARCH OF DIMES SET pedigree.

Note: If NGC receives the package unsealed, only the two Roosevelt dimes will be eligible for the MARCH OF DIMES SET pedigree and/or the Early Releases and First Releases designations.

Select the Modern tier or higher and select Special Designation / Label and check either Early Releases or First Releases. Check the NGC website for Early Releases/First Releases cut off dates. Special Designation / Label must be selected for the MARCH OF DIMES SET pedigree even if Early Releases or First Releases is not desired or if coins are received after the cutoff date for those designations.

The default label will be NGC's Roosevelt "We have nothing to fear" label (shown below):

If you would like Mint packaging returned, select "Return Mint Packaging" in section 3 of the NGC Submission Form.

Please note that NGC's First Day of Issue designation is available only for bulk submissions.

Not surprised they are doing this.

I will be keeping mine in the OGP.

Cool label and the requirements make sense and are similar to the 20th Annie set.

Mine will be going to NGC...

I have never really cared for the special labels of any kind...except the PCGS Doily which was not considered special at the time.

I was thinking of ordering the max 5 sets and keeping them in OGP. Now I might have to order 4 and 1, and send the 4 in for grading, since the requirement to get them in the FDR label is to have them unopened. I'd like to keep one in OGP. I think the Dollar in the special label slab will be a winner, since theoretically it should be limited to a max pop of 75K. I am pumped about the dimes!

For what it is worth, I would pay more for an OGP set than one in slabs.

Hopefully, I'll be successful in my attempt to buy a set or two on May 4th, but I don't plan on spending $20 per coin ($60 in total) in fees plus shipping charges to have them graded and encapsulated in the special holders. I prefer OGP for my modern coins and enjoy OSP (Original Sponsor Packaging) for my classic commemorative coins.

I'm sure there will be hype about these labels upon the coins' release, but I think interest will fade over time.

From a strictly collector viewpoint it only makes sense to keep the coins in the original package. From a potential future sale viewpoint it leans towards the graded specimens.

Most any set of graded coins can be converted to an OGP very easily at any time so paying more for the original set is a bit strange. It doesn't work the other way...In the case of the recent SAC set with the unique packaging I kept a bunch in the original packaging in addition to those sent for grading.

I usually take my lower grade coins (68's or even 69's) and put one set back in the OGP since the difference in quality is usually not apparent.

An even better scenario is when the slabs fit nicely into the OGP (like the SAE Anniv sets)and I then have the best of both worlds

That is assuming the OGP was kept by the original or current owner.

Sure, you can buy OGP materials on ebay (as was recently discussed here), but they are not free and you have to do double the work. So yes, I will pay more for a set already in OGP since it keeps me from having to find another seller with the just the OGP.

But that is just me.

You may be right, so if profit is the goal, look at past sales comparing sets with OGP vs. special slabs to see what the market prefers.

If buying a set from a private seller that would make sense...but to be able to buy direct from the Mint gives you all options....packaging, potential for grading and, if grades suck, OGP.

It costs around $3 (per submission) to have the original packaging returned from NGC so on a multi-set submission that is irrelevant. I always have the packaging returned and thus the reason I can no longer play pool in my cellar...WAAAAAY too much OGP stored on the slate
